Heavy rain engulfed Craven this week, flooding homes and bringing chaos to the roads.

Two days of continuous rain resulted in a number of homes being flooded in North Craven, including three in Town Head Way, Settle , one at Tems Side, Giggleswick , and another in Austwick .

Flooding was also reported at Red Lion Farm near Bolton Bridge, Bolton Abbey, and at homes on the A629 at Farnhill .

And, on the roads, one of the worst-hit places was Carleton, where cars were said to be floating on Pale Lane and a stranded driver had to be rescued by firefighters.

There were also problems on the A6265 between Grassington and Skipton , where the driver of a Land Rover hit a flood and ended up in a ditch. He managed to get out of the vehicle without assistance.

Other flooding blackspots included Burnsall, where the bridge near the Red Lion Hotel was closed, Gargrave and Settle.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said it had received more than 270 calls in the 24 hours up to 2.30pm on Tuesday. At one point, it was dealing with 50 incidents, with 73 incidents queued waiting for fire crews to be assigned to them.

The west and north of the country were the worst affected.

North Yorkshire Police itself fell victim to the floods, with staff unable to get to the headquarters at Newby Wiske, near Northallerton, because of flooded roads.
