Cash help available to boost cycling

Craven charities and community groups could get cash aid for recycling projects.

Grants of up to £5,000 are being offered for schemes that help prevent reusable goods ending up in landfill.

Initiatives supported so far have included collecting and reusing furniture, workshops teaching how to create items from used materials and ‘give-and-take’ days where people swap goods.

Applicants to the York and North Yorkshire Waste Partnership Community Reuse Fund are expected to raise at least 25 per cent match-funding towards project costs.

To coincide with the launch of the fund, the partnership has produced a guide for community groups interested in staging give-and-take days.

County Councillor Chris Metcalfe, partnership chairman, said: “Reuse is a priority for York and North Yorkshire. “Reuse extends the life of everyday goods – it cuts our carbon footprint, prevents unnecessary waste going to landfill and benefits our local communities.”

The deadline for grant applications is October 31.
