Skipton packaging firm Northern Paper Board has been shortlisted for two national awards, plus a high-profile regional accolade.

The Engine Shed Lane company is among the finalists in both the SME of the Year and Investment Project of the Year categories in the 2012 UK Packaging Awards, and has also been shorlisted for SME Manufacturer of the Year in annual Business awards run by a regional daily newspaper.

Northern Paper Board has grown and diversified to become the UK’s second largest manufacturer of solid board boxes for the food processing industry, primarily the meat, poultry, fish and horticultural packaging sectors.

It continues to achieve solid year-on-year growth. In the past three years, turnover has risen from £5.4 million to £8.3 million and the company is on track to achieve an estimated £9.4 million turnover in the current financial year.

Run by bothers John and Paul Curran, Northern Paper Board is undertaking a £2.4 million expansion and investment programme at its six-acre site in Skipton.

Sales director Paul said: “It is the first time in our history that we have entered the industry awards arena. To be shortlisted in two categories in the biggest and most prestigious awards for the UK packaging sector at the first attempt is some achievement.”

Winners of the awards, run by Packaging News, will be announced at the London Hilton, on Wednesday, November 14.

Northern Paper Board has also learned that it is one of three companies shortlisted for SME Manufacturer of the Year in 2012 Excellence in Business Awards run by a regional daily newspaper.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony in Leeds on Thursday, November 1, attended by Business Secretary Vince Cable and Alistair McGowan.
