CULL cows were again in the ascendancy in terms of numbers at Skipton Auction Mart’s weekly Monday prime cattle fixture, with the current milk price bringing a large proportion of lean cattle on to the market in a sale at which 80% of the 55-strong entry was dairy-bred.

Trade was similar on the week when producing an overall selling average of £531.63 per head, or 84.73p/kg, with black and white entries hitting a gross high of £797 for a submission from G Abbott & Sons, of Dacre, and a by-weight top of 107.5p/kg for a cow from George and Pauline Fleetwood, of Mirfield.

The pick of the commercial entries at £772, or 113.5, was a Blonde-cross cow from K Lister & Sons, of Kettlewell. A mature Simmental bull from RB&L Gamble, of Thorpe, sold away at £1,026.

In the clean cattle classes, top price of £982, or 127.5p/kg, fell to an under 30-month Aberdeen Angus heifer from Philip Ormerod, of West Marton.
