A TRIO of home-bred Pietrain pigs from JG Bamforth and Son, of Slaithwaite, was champion porkers at Skipton Auction Mart’s annual Christmas primestock shows and sales.

Shown by Matthew Bamforth, the first prize winners in the 85kg-plus show class, all weighing in at exactly 100kg, were all by the same boar and sow.

They were chosen as overall victors by the show judge, West Yorkshire butcher John Summers, who then snapped them up in the sales ring for £185 each, top price in show.

Mr Summers has bought the Skipton prime pig title winners for the past three years and they will again go on sale at his shop in Clayton, Bradford.

The reserve championship fell to the second prize 85kg+ trio, also pure-bred Pietrain, from up-and-coming pig breeder, 14-year-old Louise Findlay, of Coverdale. Each weighing 90kg, they sold for £135 per head to Anthony Swales for his Knavesmire Butchers shop in York.
