THERE was a strong entry of cattle at Gisburn Auction Marts' Dugdale Nutrition dairy show and sale on Thursday.

Jeremy Taylor, of Broughton, won the pedigree newly-calved class with a heifer 14 days calved and giving 36 litres, which sold for £2,150 to a Longridge pedigree dairy farmer.

The same buyer also paid £2,120 for the second prize pedigree heifer from Lee Donkin, of Copster Green, Blackburn. It was two half weeks calved and giving 30 litres.

In the commercial section, Woodplumpton farmer David Armer took first and second prizes with his newly calved heifers, just a week calved both selling at £1,900 each to JW and JH Collinson, Colne.

The newly-calved cow class was won by Harry Raw, of Eastburn, with a second lactation cow, giving over 50 litres and selling to David Coulthurst, of Goosnargh, at £1,880. In-calf heifers were much harder to sell topping at £1,350.

Auctioneer Fred Spurgeon said: “There was a huge range of prices with lots heifers either side of £1,500. However, younger lightweight heifers giving 20 litres were hard to place at £1,100 to £1,200.”
