RATHMELL farmers JD and JA Holgate took the reserve championship at Gisburn Auctions Marts' Cogent Pedigree Show on Thursday.

The runner-up was sired by Maple-Downs Attwood and sold to W Blockley, of Cheshire.

However, top honours went to PT and MR Critchley's Newfold Lotto Sunshine 3, which sold for £1,800 to WE and JW Hartley, Barnoldswick.

An unplaced heifer by Toc-Farm Duplex Glauco from Colin Singleton topped the sale at £1,810, also selling to Messrs Hartley.

Local farmers J Seed & Son sold at £1,760 with a Cervi Maxigoat ET heifer and David and Margaret Booth took £1,460 for their third prize heifer going to JJ & JD Graves, Carlisle.

The first prize non-registered heifer from JG Hall, of Gargrave, sold at £1,540 to Messrs Hartley, but some older dispersal cows found the market much tougher selling at up to £640.

In Saturday's store cattle show, prices were generally less, mainly influenced by prime cattle deadweight prices.

Two stock bulls and 22 cows, with and without calves, achieved respectable prices and the 47 young bulls topped at £1,070 with younger animals gaining prizes for Tom Robinson, James Maguire and Arthur Taylor.

The silver tray was awarded to Joe Bosworth for his first prize yearling heifer, which sold for £990 to judge David Middlemiss. Reserve champion went to David Capstick for his first prize steer which at £1,080 reflected its size over the champion.
