DAIRY farmer Sally Wellock clinched her first-ever Craven Dairy Auction championship at the opening June show and sale at Skipton Auction Mart, selling for the highest price in almost a year.

Sally, who runs her Harehills pedigree herd at West House Farm, Oldfield, near Oakworth, secured the title with her newly-calven cow, Harehills Ethel 628.

The 16-day calved second calver, giving 33 litres, sold for £2,250 to Brian Moorhouse of Bell Busk.

The first prize newly-calven heifer from Andrew Jennings, of the Abbeyhouse pedigree dairy herd in Fountains, Ripon, was awarded the reserve championship by show judge David Berry, of Thornton-in-Craven.

Abbeyhouse Sailing Tess came to market after calving 21 days earlier. Giving 21 litres, she went under the hammer for £1,380 when joining Gouldings of Castley, Otley.

The second prize newly-calven heifer from South Craven commercial dairyman, David Fort, of High Malsis Farm, Malsis, sold for £1,580 to Wick Williams of Cheshire, with the third in class from Raymond and Robert Johnson, of Felliscliffe, Harrogate, making £1,140, again going to Wick Williams.

A show of rearing calves saw Fred Houseman top the trade again with a highly sought after blue heifer reaching £385. A tremendous Friesian calf from John Wright of Kirk Syke, Airton, also fetched £230.

In the bull calves, RD Metcalfe sold a Limousin cross for £300; Church Farm Enterprises sold a British Blue Cross for £375 and RL Wright and Son a black and white for £230.

Church Farm Enterprises also sold a nice British Blue heifer calf for £385 and K and M Berry, a Hereford for £295.
