Reception children at Embsay Primary School had a flipping good time on Shrove Tuesday.
The 31 youngsters made pancakes and, along the way, looked at the meaning of Shrove Tuesday, healthy eating and kitchen hygiene.
“They had a great time,” said reception teacher Jane Rennie. “As a church school, it is important for the children to start learning about the Christian festivals.
“All the children had a go a stirring the mix, but the best part was tasting the finished pancakes, with a choice of sugar, syrup or lemon.
“Many said they would go home and make pancakes with their families.”
Shrove Tuesday is the day before the start of Lent during which Christians traditionally observed 40 days of fasting. It was a day to confess, to take stock and to eat up all the things that would be forbidden in Lent.
