Class three youngsters at Eastburn Junior and Infant School travelled back in time when they returned from their half-term break on Monday.
They held a Roman Day – the culmination of a project based on Gillian Cross’ book, The Roman Beanfeast.
Imitating a scene from the book, the 28 children were then challenged to use the holiday to make something for the Roman Day.
“They came up with catapults, shields, mosaics, a Roman standard and even a coliseum,” said class teacher Sandra McLean.
“They arrived at school in Roman dress and the whole day was spent on Roman activities. We also had a banquet with Roman food, with everyone lying on the floor as they did in Roman times.
“It was a fantastic day and built on what we had learned. It really helped putting everything into practice.”
