One exceptional achiever was Matthew Cant, from Steeton, who gained a quartet of A* in biology, chemistry, physics and maths, as well as an A in general studies.

Matthew is going to India for six months to do missionary work in Kolkata and will then study medicine at Birmingham University.

he said: "It's quite shocking, but I'm very, very happy. My teachers were expecting it but I wasn't."

Another student bound for Birmingham is Hester Thomas, from Sutton, who gained an A* in maths and As in physics and French.

"I worked really hard so I was hoping I'd do well," she said. "My parents are proud."

Sam Booth, of Cowling, was celebrating an A* in maths and As in further maths, physics and chemistry.

"The work was a lot harder than last year, but then I was also trying harder because I knew what I was working towards," he said.

Alison Briggs, from Steeton, achieved a star distinction in BTEC sport, distinctions in BTEC science and acting and a B in A-level English literature.

"I'm relieved that I've got enough to do what I want," she said. "I'm going to Salford University to study sports rehabilitation."

Jesse Cracknell, of Steeton, gained As in A-level product design and applied art and design, as well as a star distinction in art and design graphics.

"I couldn't have done better, I've got everything I need," he said. "I'm going to Manchester Met University to do three-dimensional design."

Lucy Thompson-Sharpe, from Skipton, is off to Oxford University, after picking up an A* in politics and As in English and History.

"I had no idea how well I'd do," she said. "I thought I'd do worst in politics, but I got the A* for that."
