PUPILS of Hothfield Junior School in Silsden have been making friends with the Knitting Nanas.

Older ladies from Silsden were invited into the school to teach the youngsters how to knit.

As they worked with their needles over several weeks, the two age groups got to know each other.

Hothfield head James Procter said the Knitting Nanas project was intended to break down barriers between younger and older people.

He said: “The most important thing wasn’t the knitting, it was about getting the two generations talking to each other while they did it.

“They produced a beautiful blanket and learned a great deal about each other informally. The nanas were recruited from around the community.

The project was filmed by Keighley-based arts organisation Imaginarium Seed and could be used by other schools as a learning resource.

Mr Procter said: “The film is a model of how generations can learn to work together and may be published on our website.

“We’re hoping we can run further Knitting Nanas groups with more members of our community.”
