CHILDREN have been lighting the way to a £5 million school that will serve the children of Bentham and Burton-in-Lonsdale for generations to come.

The youngsters took part in a lantern walk to the new school - which will be officially opened next Friday, February 27 - and were joined by staff, governors, parents and members of the community hub, The Looking Well.

Creative artists from the Looking Well worked with the children, teaching them the skills needed to make lanterns that would safely carry light from the old school building to the new. The procession carried the light of learning to its new home.

"It was a wonderful way to make the move to our incredible new school," said headteacher Catherine Boocock. "It was really well supported and I was very touched when shoppers and shop staff came out onto the pavement to cheer us on our way. There will be a formal opening ceremony later this month, but this has been a brilliant start."
