A NEW image for Skipton's Greatwood and Horse Close estate has been created by a couple of schoolchildren.

Eight-year-old Antoni Roberts and nine-year-old Olive Mitton, both pupils at Greatwood Community Primary School, were the successful winners of a competition aimed at coming up with a new identity for the community.

The pair beat off competition from 36 other youngsters with Antoni providing the art work and Olive the words.

Computer enthusiast Antoni was inspired by the tree and wanted to make Greatwood look like a hill with the tree on it.

The image of a horse was inspired by a horse he had seen on the estate's Khyber Pass.

Meanwhile Olive came up with the phrase "one community, many stories" which the judges thought was an apt representation of the estate and combined it with Antoni's design.

Antoni was rewarded with a prize of £300 in High Street vouchers, while Olive received book vouchers.

Olive’s mum, Laura, said although they did not live on the estate, they felt very much part of the community.

“Our children attend Greatwood School and I am an active member of the Friends of Greatwood School PTA Group (FROGS)," said Laura.

"We have attended events at the community centre and have been welcomed by the residents of this friendly vibrant and diverse neighbourhood."

She said that was what Olive had wanted to achieve with her idea.

"I am very proud of Olive coming up with this idea and it was lovely to see it as a cake we could enjoy eating," she said.

Residents Association Chairman Pat Haygarth said the new image would be launched at a family sports day on Spring Bank holiday Monday, May 25.

“Thanks go to Antoni and Olive who have done brilliant work. We will use it to officially promote and shout about our new identity at the sports day, including the great work shaping up in the community.”

An event to announce competition winners was attended by many people, including Greatwood headteacher Garry de Castro Morland.

The school will promote the new logo on its website and new signs will go up outside the estate community centre.
