STUDENTS at Skipton Academy have given positive feedback to recent changes.

The former Aireville School became an academy at the start of the current academic year - and got a fresh name, a smarter uniform and new principal Wendy Hamilton.

Now a student survey has revealed that the learners think it is top of the class, with more than than 70 per cent saying they liked the school.

Nearly all those taking part (95 per cent) felt that teachers were enforcing the new dress code either very or quite strictly. And significant numbers felt that students were trying harder in class. Nine out of 10 students also believed they were on target to do well in their exams.

Ms Hamilton said: “The student survey proves we are on track at The Skipton Academy. I was particularly pleased to note that students have highlighted improvements in teaching and learning, and in the breadth of the curriculum. There is a positive vibe and can-do attitude around school and I am very proud of all our students and staff.”

Students were asked to list the main changes since becoming an academy with 41 per cent highlighting the smarter look. Stricter discipline was the next most obvious change with improved facilities, students trying harder in class and more subject choices also noticed.

The teachers came in for significant praise too. Students were asked for comments on the best thing about school, and the dedication, enthusiasm and approachability of staff was a theme which recurred time and again.

“It was very pleasing to see how well appreciated our teachers and support staff are. I know they are fantastic, and it has been proved that the students think they are too,” said Ms Hamilton.

Comments about the staff included: “They are trying to make the school better for us. They also give us advice when we need it, there is always someone to talk to”, “The teachers are very happy and give you work that challenges you” and “The school has amazing teachers that really influence our learning.”

A third of the 450 students took part in the survey which was conducted in school during January and early February.

Ms Hamilton added: “This is the first time we have done a student survey. This feedback is important to us and school surveys are an idea which we will repeat in the future.”
