SKIPTON'S Otley Street Community Nursery School has been judged outstanding by Ofsted inspectors.

The local authority maintained nursery, which has 79 children on its roll, received top marks in all four categories - the achievement of pupils, the quality of teaching, behaviour and safety of pupils and leadership and management of the school.

In her report, lead inspector Nora Waugh said the teaching was outstanding, activities were interesting, appealing and carefully planned and sensitive and thoughtful discussions helped develop children's language and thinking skills.

Achievement was also outstanding, with the majority of youngsters working above levels expected for their age by the time they left.

And she added: "Exceptionally warm and caring relationships create an atmosphere where children are nurtured and are very secure. They quickly learn tolerance, respect and to be part of the school community.

"The headteacher and her team passionately believe children only truly thrive and achieve their best in an atmosphere where families are respected, valued and encouraged to participate. This ethos underpins every aspect of the excellent work of the school."

Headteacher Patricia Lord said she was absolutely delighted that all the hard work and commitment of the staff team and governing body had been recognised.

She added: "Most importantly I am thrilled that the inspector appreciated the key strengths of our school. – they are our excellent partnerships with parents, our care and support for each child as an individual (whatever their needs) and our experienced and highly qualified team of dedicated staff."

Chairman of the governors, Janet Booth, said: “In a climate where it is becoming increasingly difficult for schools to achieve an outstanding judgement it makes Otley Street’s achievement all the more special.

"We have an amazing team who work hard and are totally committed, so it is for them and the governing body a real celebration. We have always felt ‘outstanding’ so to get that acknowledged is wonderful.”
