RECENT inclement weather and an early season have been blamed for a drop in entries at Grassington and District Horticultural Society on Saturday.

But organisers said the quality of exhibits remained high.

The event was staged at Grassington Town Hall and Mike Cunningham emerged victorious with most points in the show.

He also took the Marshall Rose Bowl for the best single flower (a dahlia), the society cup for the best vegetable (carrots) and the Jim Bell Cup for the master gardener class.

Another multiple winner was David Hobson.

He won the David Pickles Cup for the best rose, the Ron Jenkins Award for the best fuchsia and the society trophy for most points in the flower section.

Anne Schindler won the Geoff Cowling Upper Wharfedale Trophy for the best flower arrangement and Rhoda Johnson won the chairman's challenge trophy for the best onion, from a set provided by the society.

Other winners were Philip Johnson who won the Harker-Leder Trophy for the most points in the vegetable section and Brenda Taylor and Anne Sugden, who jointly won the cup for most points in flower arranging.
