A GARGRAVE woman described as a "powerhouse in the village" died last Wednesday at the age of 89.

Veronica Fletcher was born on November 13, 1924, in Otterburn House and grew up in Otterburn.

As a young woman, she served in the Land Army in Essex during the Second World War.

She married Tim Fletcher and the couple had three children, Rhodabel, Sally and Nigel, who all grew up at The Hollies in Gargrave.

Veronica was heavily involved in all aspects of village life, including Gargrave Village Hall, St Andrew's Church and the Mother's Union, and Gargrave Parish Council.

She ran Meal on Wheels for many years, was involved in the WRVS, was an active member of Craven Lawn Tennis Club and also enjoyed skiing.

"She was a doer and a giver," said her son, Nigel Fletcher. "She was involved in most things in the village."

Her daughter, Sally Russell, said that her mother took a lot of pride in Gargrave and believed everyone should give back to the village.

"She got very cross if people came to live in the village and didn't get involved," said Sally.

Dennis French, a former chairman and trustee at Gargrave Village Hall, said: "She was quite a character and was a prominent figure in the village.

"She ran the over-60s section at the village hall for many, many years," said Dennis. "She was in command and was hands-on running things. She was a powerhouse in the village.

"She was a good old rock who was full of energy and always said what she thought."

Veronica's grandson, Timothy Morton-Smith, who is from California, echoed that sentiment, adding: "Everyone appreciated her honesty. She was always straight to the point and you knew what was on her mind."

Veronica was also known for her support for and involvement in the Pendle Forest and Craven Hunt.

Nigel said: "She was a lifelong supporter of the hunt. My father used to shoot a lot, so she was very good at plucking birds."

"We were all weaned on pheasant and grouse," added Sally. "She was never happier than plucking a bird at the kitchen table."

Veronica is survived by two children, Sally and Nigel, and six grandchildren.

A private cremation service will be held tomorrow at Skipton Crematorium. A thanksgiving service to celebrate her life will be held on November 13 at St Andrew's Church, Gargrave, with a reception to follow in Gargrave Village Hall.
