A CLAPHAM man has made new calls for work on the village's rail viaduct to be started again - and says his doctor has now prescribed medication to help him deal with the stress caused by the site's constantly-running generator.

Repair work to the viaduct is being undertaken by contractors Taziker Industrial on behalf of Network Rail, which owns and operates the country's railway infrastructure.

The initial phase of the work came to a halt five months ago - but an on-site generator for the benefit of security staff is still running around the clock, says resident Wayne Reddyhough.

As reported in the Craven Herald more than a month ago, Mr Reddyhough says he is upset by the noise from the generator - "which never stops" - and by the effect the fumes from it are having on wildlife and the environment.

He said: "Nothing whatsoever has changed since I first complained to them. The generator is still going 24 hours a day, chucking out emissions into the atmosphere, and absolutely nothing has been done on the viaduct.

"How long is this going to go on for? All I want is for them to get on with it and finish the job. And it's not just me - my neighbour across the way is also having problems.

"My doctor has prescribed medication for an anxiety disorder caused by the stress from this, and I can't sleep properly. It's deeply affecting my quality of life. It would be something if I at least knew when it was going to end, but that could be years away as things are going."

Mr Reddyhough added that he was still concerned about the effect on the environment that the generator was having. "It seems ludicrous to have it running all the time when we are always being told to be concerned about carbon emissions."

A spokesman for Network Rail said: "We do not have a date for strengthening work on the viaduct to begin but are doing all we can to progress the situation as quickly as possible. The generator is required as part of the site security and we apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
