SKIPTON Building Society Camerata will give a special performance as part of the town's Remembrance weekend next Saturday, November 8.

And the programme will feature the world premiere of a specially commissioned concerto for euphonium and orchestra, Lest We Forget, by Thomas Lydon.

Musical director Ben Crick said: "This concerto commemorates Craven's involvement in the First World War and features the euphonium – a solo brass band instrument rarely found in an orchestra - as a tribute to Yorkshire's brass band tradition which is such an important part our musical heritage.”

Soloist will be Phillippe Schwartz, of Grimethorpe Colliery Band.

Born in Luxembourg, he has been playing the euphonium since the age of eight when he joined the Conservatoire of the City of Luxembourg. He came to Manchester in 2004 to further his studies at the Royal Northern College of Music. Since moving to the UK, he has had a busy performance schedule as a soloist and band player performing in Luxembourg, Norway, Germany and England.

Lest We Forget also employs electronic loops and playbacks using equipment that has been provided by Roland, a leading manufacturer of electronic instruments.

Ben added: “We were delighted when Roland were able to join the team as technical consultants enabling us to use the latest music technology alongside traditional orchestral composition for this project. Lest We Forget compositionally displays the long heritage of western classical music whilst conveying a relevance that could not be more topical.”

The commissioning of the new work was sponsored by The Craven Trust.

Mark Facer, the trust's chairman said: "We were delighted to be able to support Lest We Forget, not only because it is such an innovative musical project, but most importantly because it commemorates all those from the Craven area who have lost their lives in conflicts around the World."

The programme also includes Vaughan Williams' The Lark Ascending and music by Elgar, Finzi and Britten. Other soloists are Joseph Doody (tenor), Rachel Drury (violin), Matthew Crossley (French horn).

Tickets, priced at £15 (concessions) are available at skiptoncamerata.com or by phoning 01756 791656 during office hours.
