THE former landlord of the Old Star pub in Steeton has died at the age of 83.
John Hewitt, of Cononley, ran the pub at Steeton Top for around two decades from 1972.
The popular pub was crowded for a celebration of his life following his recent funeral.
Mr Hewitt was born in Morley and was originally an electrician at Gildersome company Henry Booth.
While with the company, Mr Hewitt began a part-time job at The Bull, Broughton, in the late 1960s, then he took on the Old Star.
Mr Hewitt’s son, also called John, said his father had lived with Parkinson’s Disease for the past 10 years.
He said: “My father was still a very happy-go-lucky chap. He was very showman-ish behind the bar, a very well-liked landlord. “
Mr Hewitt was for the past couple of decades close friends with Marie Croad, of Cowling, and went on holidays with her.
