A 22-year-old has been sent to prison for 21 days for his part in the burglary of a Cross Hills hairdressers.

Ben Porter drove his co-accused Lee Nolan to Main Street on November 10 and waited outside while Nolan entered Elixir White Hair and Beauty Salon, Skipton magistrates heard.

Nolan took a number of personal items from the normally locked staff kitchen, including a mobile phone, bank cards, key ring and paracetamol tablets, the court was told on Friday.

A member of staff came across Nolan at around 5pm and the two men were spotted crossing the road while clutching at their jackets, as if to hide something, by two off-duty police officers, the court heard.

Their car was picked up a short while later by police and Porter stayed in the car, while Nolan attempted to run off, eventually having to be restrained.

Porter had on him just the key ring and paracetamol, while the remaining items were scattered by Nolan, the court heard.

The items were recovered and identified by their owners, with the exception of £10 and a £12 purse.

Porter, who admitted burglary, driving otherwise in accordance with a licence and without third party insurance, had not initially known what was going on, the court was told.

It was only when they reached Cross Hills and Nolan had gone into the hairdressers had he realised.

He had no previous convictions of a similar nature and owned the car used in the burglary, although he only had a provisional licence, which had six penalty points on it for no insurance.

Magistrates said he might have "gone along for the ride" but he had worked with Nolan to carry out the burglary.

They added it was unfortunate for them that they had been seen by two off duty officers.

Porter, of High Street, Colne, was jailed for 21 days for the burglary. For driving without insurance, his licence was endorsed with six penalty points and he received a 12-month driving ban. There was no separate penalty for driving otherwise in accordance with the licence. He was also ordered to pay a victims surcharge of £80, but no costs.

Nolan, was dealt with separately at Harrogate Magistrates Court where he received 28 days in custody.
