THE plight of refugees around the world is being highlighted at three Catholic churches in Craven in the run-up to Christmas.

And, on Sunday, members of the justice and peace group at St Stephen's, Skipton, braved one of the coldest days of the winter to walk to St Margaret Clitherow’s in Threshfield, in a bid to raise awareness.

En route, the six walkers – and two dogs - took shelter at Rylstone Church, at the invitation of the rector, the Rev David Macha, and were welcomed at St Margaret’s with mulled wine and mince pies by more than 100 people gathered for a carol service featuring the Buckden Singers.

Parish priest Mgr Andrew Summersgill said: "All during the Advent preparation for Christmas, churchgoers in both churches and at the Catholic Chapel in Broughton Hall are being reminded of the plight of the millions of refugees across the world. The inspiration is drawn from the new-born Christ child being taken soon after his birth to Egypt, an image very familiar from Christmas cards and carols."
