CONFUSION still reigns over parking regulations on Skipton setts where drivers are now permitted to stay on market days, but only under certain conditions.

Motorists are being urged to check the notices which explain the times when the setts are available for parking.

Traffic wardens have the ability to change the signs on the lamp posts to alert drivers to when parking permission on market days has been altered to allow them to stay.

Dave Parker, chief officer of Skipton Town Council, said: “Generally, no parking is allowed on the High Street at all on a market day.

"However, the new regulations do allow us to open up sections to parking where, say, on a day when the weather is particularly bad, some traders have chosen not to stand.

"We can only open up stretches where it is safe to do so and we can’t allow parking immediately adjacent to a stall – or in small gaps between stalls.”

He added: “Anyone wishing to park should avoid small gaps, should not attempt to move any barriers or cones and, most important, should check the nearest sign to see if the area has been opened up.

"It is also worth remembering that the maximum length of stay is still one hour.”
