A 19 YEAR old Barnoldswick man has won a national Young Councillor of the Year award.

Cllr Lyle Davy, who represents Barnoldswick's Coates ward, won the Local Government Information Unit's (LGiU) 2015 Young Councillor of the Year at an Councillor Achievement Awards ceremony held on Monday (March 2) in Westminster.

The award honours the hard work of councillors from across the country that often goes unrecognised.

Cllr Davy was selected for the award by demonstrating a commitment to working for his community.

Elected in May 2014, Cllr Davy is the youngster councillor in Europe. Since then, he has become the vice chairman of Pendle Council's Accounts and Audit Committee and is a member of the Tour of Britain Delivery Group.

"I'm absolutely speechless," said Cllr Davy on his Facebook page. "I really did not expect to win."

Jonathan Carr-West, chief executive of LGiU, said: β€œIt is a real privilege to honour the outstanding efforts of councillors who work day in and day out to make our communities healthier, our streets safer and our public services stronger.

"We congratulate Councillor Davy and look forward to hearing about his future success.”
