PRIMARY school teams from across Craven remembered local rugby legend Johnny Walker when they took part in a memorial tag rugby festival hosted by Giggleswick Junior School.

Johnny, who went to Settle Primary, Middle and High Schools and worked as properties manager at Giggleswick School, was a talented rugby player, representing the North of England and Yorkshire. He died in January 2013, aged 44.

The tag rugby festival was supported by the Walker family, including sons Jack and Chris who currently play for Yorkshire Carnegie, and who donated trophies for the event.

The RFU hosted a morning training seminar and the children got to view the England Women's Team World Cup Trophy. Referees from North Ribblesdale RUFC and Settle College assisted with scoring and cakes were sold to raise money for Giggleswick Junior School and Settle Pirmary School charities.

To round of a day of sport, Giggleswick Junior School hosted a netball training event and tournament supported by coaches and players from the England netball team.

Richard Wright, headteacher at Settle Primary School and organiser of the event, said: "It was a fantastic day of rugby and I am very grateful to the Walker family for allowing us to continue this special tournament and to all the organisations who have worked together to make this event another big success.

"Giggleswick School have again done us proud and it has been a pleasure to host this tournament on their superb grounds.

"We have seen a tremendous display of rugby and the overall standard of rugby is amongst the highest we have seen in a local event. Well done to all the players who took part and thank you to all the schools who attended."

The under nines contest was won by Giggleswick Junior School and the Under 11 victors were Long Preston Primary School.
