WORK has started on a major safety and security scheme at The Skipton Academy.

The £179, 000 scheme involves upgraded fencing and perimeter safeguards plus new paths improving the site which borders Craven College, Craven Swimming Pool and Aireville Park.

Carnam Construction is undertaking the project.

Principal Wendy Hamilton said: “I am very pleased to see this work finally under way. A feasibility study was undertaken a few years ago, but the costs proved prohibitive for the local authority. As an academy, we have been able to successfully bid to have the works completed.

“The allocation of such a large sum of money to the new academy highlights the Department for Education’s confidence in us. The work will provide safer access routes for students, staff and visitors.”

The work is expected to be finished by the end of May.
