BOYS made the audience roar with laughter at a Barnoldswick school's fashion show which raised nearly £1,000 for charity.

The event, which has been referred to as the Fashion Show With a Difference, saw 36 boys at West Craven High School and one male teacher don dresses and take a stroll down the catwalk to raise money for Pendleside Hospice.

The fashion show, held in front of a packed school hall on May 8, was organised by 15-year-old pupils Jasmine Cooper and Megan Holden in memory of Jasmine's mum, Michelle Cooper, an Earby woman who died of cancer earlier this year.

“I would like to thank everyone for coming and supporting the show," said Jasmine. "I am overwhelmed by the amount we have raised for such a worthy cause. I hope it makes a big difference to Pendleside Hospice.”

All 200 tickets were sold prior to the event. This, combined with a £100 donation made by Tony Collins of The Green Street in Barnoldswick and refreshments sold on the night, raised nearly £800 for the charity.

Sponsorship money from the contestants also has yet to be counted, but Jasmine is hopeful the grand total will be around £1,000.

Headteacher Craig Baker said: “The performances by the boys made the packed hall roar with laughter. Well done to all who took part, from the PTA, the staff and students, to Jasmine and Megan, who organised the event. It was a real team effort, which has raised at least £800 for Pendleside Hospice so far, and we are still counting.”

School officials said the winners impressed three judges with their "pouting" and "swagger" to claim the top three prizes.

Year 11 student Lewis Wilson won first prize, Year 9 pupil Teal Amos finished second and Year 7 student Daniel Edwards was third.

"Again, I am overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and commitment of our students and my fellow colleagues," said West Craven's Head of English, Gail Hargreaves, who was one of the judges. "Huge congratulations to Jasmine and Megan - their determination to make this a truly memorable event has paid off beyond all expectations - to have sold all 200 tickets before the event is unheard of!

"I haven't laughed that much since I don't know when," she added. "The boys were amazing. I think we should make it an annual event."
