GREATWOOD Community Primary School has struck gold - for its sports provision.

The Skipton school - which has about 250 pupils - has been awarded gold status by the Youth Sports Trust.

Year six teacher and PE co-ordinator Tom Finch said: "It shows we are school that goes above and beyond what can be expected.

"We do anything and everything when it comes to sport. We have clubs for fencing, dodgeball and street dance and we have just bought equipment for frisbee golf.

"We try to encourage everyone to try something new - even if it is just for one session. There is a huge percentage of pupils who take part and they absolutely love it."

He added that achieving the gold standard was a massive deal as it had only been given to about 90 schools across the country.
