YOUNG footballers have been thanked for making it their goal to help a Craven village's 'save a life' bid.

Parents joined dozens of children from Craven Wanderers FC to deliver information leaflets about the village's defibrillator project throughout Ingleton.

And the first village training session on using the defibrillators and other resuscitation techniques has also been held. The next training session is on Friday, July 10, in Ingleton Community Centre, from 2pm to 4pm.

The 'isavealife' group in Ingleton aims to have five defibrillators situated in strategic places around the village by the end of the year.

The group is also providing regular training and awareness sessions throughout the year to teach people about the importance of calling 999 and performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation while waiting for the defibrillator to arrive.

Ingleton resident Laraine Sullivan, a former nurse and clinical instructor at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary, led the first session. She has been an advanced life-support instructor with the Resuscitation Council since 2007.

She said: "There was a big turnout of over 40 parents and children delivering the leaflets to all the houses in Ingleton. This was fantastic on so many levels. Not only has it raised awareness about the project...but also all of the youngsters feel part of the project because they have been involved.

"Craven Wanderers have donated money towards the cabinet and defibrillator that is going to be sited on the outside of the school - this is where they play football during the season.

"As a committee we are discussing where the defibrillators should be sited. Also there needs to be an agreement from someone nearby to check that it is working on a weekly basis.

"We are also discussing whether they should be locked or unlocked. The Resuscitation Council UK and the British Heart Foundation recommend that they should be unlocked but obviously there are potential problems with vandalism and theft."

There will be further training sessions on August 19, September 3, September 28, November 3 and December 10.
