SUNSHINE, royal visitors, celebrities and the best of British farming combined to make the 157th Great Yorkshire Show a spectacular event.

England’s premier agricultural show attracted a total of 132,131 people, an increase on last year’s figure of 130,989.

Guests included HRH The Prince of Wales and HRH The Duchess of Cornwall.

And among those to meet the Prince was Robert Crampton from Wharfedale Woodlands, Grassington.

He and his wife, Angela, were showing their Whitefaced Woodland sheep for the first time and their tup, Sonny, was named breed champion.

In total, they won nine rosettes.

Also enjoying success in the sheep pens were S and P Scrivin, of Elslack.

They took two championships - Derbyshire Gritstone and Lonk - and were judged to have the best hill sheep.

In the Dalesbred section, top honours went to RH Close, of Starbotton, with J Bradley, of Giggleswick, a close second.

On the cattle field, the best Craven exhibitors were R and E Butterfield, of Bentham, who as well as winning class rosettes, also took the interbreed dairy trophy for the best pair of exhibitor-bred animals.

There was more local success in the egg section where first-time exhibitor Andrew Peach, of Skipton, won eight prizes, including all three rosettes in one class.

"It was unbelievable," said Andrew. "It was a fantastic show and I will try again next year."

Preparations are now under way for the society’s autumn event, Countryside Live, which takes place at the Harrogate showground on Saturday, October 17, and Sunday, October 18.
