BENTHAM Primary School has appointed a maths champion.

Helen Jarvis, who is a governor at the school, will work with youngsters, parents and staff to promote mathematical understanding and skills.

There will be a particular emphasis on mental maths and "Maths Wizard" challenges will be introduced for each class.

In addition, there will be weekly "celebrations" of mathematical successes, maths quizzes for key stage two pupils and a lunchtime maths club, with indoor and outdoor activities.

Headteacher Catherine Boocock said: "This year’s SATs results were very pleasing and reflected the good job that the staff and pupils have done throughout the year. However, nothing is ever perfect and we know we can always do a better job.

"The staff and I did an in-depth analysis of all the results and decided that we would make mental maths our focus for the September term. To make it a really memorable project we decided that we should appoint a maths champion."
