THE planting of an orchard on the Chapel Road recreation ground in Steeton will cost the parish council only £50.

Steeton-with-Eastburn councillors recently discussed the project, which is due to spruce up an area of land currently used as an unauthorised car park.

The council has been working with Bradford Environmental Action Trust (BEAT), which is able to access funding from Yorkshire Bank to buy the trees.

BEAT also has volunteers who hope to plant the trees before March this year, and building contractor Danny Clarke has offered to help with planting at no cost to the council.

A mix of cherry, whitebeam and rowan trees will be planted in two areas, and daffodil bulbs will also be planted.

The council recently agreed to spend £500 planting seasonal bedding in the Steeton Memorial Gardens and also pay around £500 for ongoing maintenance of Eastburn rose garden and the landscape areas around Steeton Community Hub.

Councillors are looking into the feasibility of demolishing a wall at the Memorial Wood.
