WITH less than 100 days to go until the Tour de Yorkshire, a competition has been launched to decorate the route.

Welcome to Yorkshire is calling on businesses, landowners, farmers, schools and community groups to get creative and enter the Lining the Route Land Art Competition.

Since the Grand Depart of the Tour de France came to Craven and Yorkshire two years ago, land art has played a huge role in the county's cycling legacy.

People will get the chance to vote for their favourite piece of art during race weekend in late April, and the winner will receive a trophy.

Stage one of the three-stage race – on April 29 – starts in Beverley and finishes 114 miles (185km) later in Settle. On route, it will pass through Grassington, Threshfield, Cracoe, Gargrave, Hellifield, Long Preston and Giggleswick.

Cllr Richard Foster, leader of Craven District Council, which successfully bid for Settle to host the finish, said: “We’re very excited about the Tour de Yorkshire coming to Craven and particularly the finish of the first stage in Settle.

“Plans are well underway to make this a great experience for cycling fans, tourists, residents and businesses, and the response from Settle and the rest of Craven has been very positive.

“The public art works on display for the Tour de France were fantastic and I’m sure people will want to do the area proud for the Tour de Yorkshire as well."
