Students at Craven College celebrated their achievements in further education and degree level at a ceremony at the Rendezvous Hotel.

Joining them in the college’s Celebration of Awards was guest speaker Stuart Billingham, Emeritus Professor of Lifelong Learning at York St John University, along with families, friends, staff and governors. Kevin Wharton, vice-chairman of the college, presented the prizes.

The Principal’s Prize went to Sam Knapp who, although having disabilities which restricted his mobility and communication, had achieved academic success and had been an inspiration to staff and students.

“We have all learnt a lot from him and have benefited, as an organisation, from his contribution to college life,” said college principal Alan Blackwell.

The Higher Education Award for Academic Excellence went to Christine Johnson and the Award for Outstanding Contribution to Joyce Wallace.

Mr Blackwell said 2010 had been a significant year for the college. Not only had it been identified by the Skills Funding Agency as one of the top-performing General Further Education Colleges in the country, but it had also been one of two colleges in the region to gain funding for a new building to support the ever-increasing numbers of students travelling to Craven College.

Mr Blackwell said students came from more than 100 different schools, crossing district and county boundaries, to experience the unique qualities of Craven College.

It now provides opportunities for students to progress from entry to degree level, continuing the 115- year tradition of serving the community.

Mr Blackwell listed the achievements of students on top of their academic successes, which included the participation of the college football team in the European Youth Helsinki Cup in Finland; a plethora of awards at regional horticultural competitions; the setting up of a radio station on campus; fashion shows that had achieved acclaim from leading designers and raising hundreds of pounds for charity.

Mr Blackwell said: “We’ve known for some time that Craven College students have among the highest standards and skills, and are able to compete anywhere in the region and now we know officially that we are one of the very best colleges in England”.

Guest speaker Mr Billingham said the college was respected throughout the region for its innovative approach and student achievement. The education and training that Craven College provided enabled students to gain a firm foundation for their future life.
