Embsay churches: Sunday’s Methodist service at 10.30am will be led by the Rev R Atkinson. At St Mary’s, the 9.30am service on Sunday will be a family communion and on Tuesday there is a Holy Communion service at 10.30am and from 2pm to 4pm the church is open for tea, coffee, home baking and conversation. Also, on Fridays in term-time, there is a Smiley Faces toddler praise from 1.45pm to 3.15pm. This is for pre-school children, parents, grandparents and carers. Please note the Methodist Chapel is open every Monday between 2pm and 4pm for anyone seeking a time of peace and quiet.

Men’s Lunch: Calling all men with time on their hands. Come along to today’s monthly pie lunch at 12.30pm in the supper room in Embsay Village Hall and sample a fine pie and peas lunch. The cost is £3, which usually includes a talk. To help with catering, ring 07834 713735 to book your place.

Library hours: As an experiment, the library will open on Wednesdays during March from 10.30am until noon. There will be refreshments available to library users.

Police surgery: PCSO Ruth Pearson’s next drop-in surgery at Samuel Taylors will be tomorrow between 2pm and 3pm.

Parish council: The next meeting of the parish council will take place tonight at 7.30pm in Embsay Village Hall. The meeting will consider the impact of the Tour de France on the two villages and local land development issues.

Gardening Club: David Alred’s illustrated talk on butterflies and dragonflies at the February meeting highlighted the beauty and fascination of these insects. Members were astonished to learn there were more than 6,000 species of dragonflies worldwide with 40 varieties in this country. At the next meeting in the village hall tomorrow at 7.30pm, Ian Taylor will talk about daffodils. Entry is £1.50 for members and £3 for non-members.

Film Night: The next film night will be on Wednesday at 7.30pm in Embsay Village Hall when Philomena, starring Judi Dench and Steve Coogan, will be screened. This is the true story of a mother searching for the son who was taken from her 50 years previously. Admission at the door is £4, which includes tea/coffee and biscuits. Everyone is welcome.
