Retired Men’s Forum: John Gillegan gave a slide presentation of a Caribbean adventure. Next week, which will be the last of the current season, Tony Birkitt will speak about the rise of the Medieval Cathedral.

Lacemakers: Seventeen members attended the February meeting of the Craven Guild of Lacemakers. The group has been invited by Yarndale to take part again in their event at the auction mart in September. The next meeting will be at the Swadford Centre on Wednesday from 10am to 3.30pm. Camera Club: The set subject competition was in two sections. The first was “bridges” which was won by Mike Breeze. The second one was “glass” and the winner was Jenny Doyle. The overall winner was Mike Breeze. In the open subject competition the winner was again Mike who also took second spot and third was Keith Hillery.

Gardeners Club: Jeff Hutchings will be the speaker at the next meeting of Skipton Gardeners Club. His subject is growing hardy orchids. It will take place in the Soroptimist Rooms, Otley Street, on Wednesday at 7.30pm.

Fine arts: Thursday’s meeting of the Skipton and Wharfedale Decorative and Fine Arts Society was addressed by Lynn Gibson. She took members on a pictorial journey through the art world from the Renaissance art of Raphael and Rembrandt to Damien Hirst’s pickled sharks and Tracy Emin’s dirty bed to consider the question of “what is art?”. After this entertaining lecture, members were invited to view the exhibition of Social and Museum Art at the Craven Museum, an exhibition of articles loaned by the public.
