Annual meeting: Austwick Field and Local History Society will hold its annual general meeting on Wednesday at 7.30pm in the parish hall. This will be followed by a presentation by Diane Hubbard on Older houses and energy efficiency - how much do we actually know?

Church news: On Sunday, there will be Holy Communion with the Bishop of Ripon, the Right Rev James Bell at 9.30am. There will be a second communion service at 6.30pm. Austwick Church had an excellent harvest weekend. A full church enjoyed the harvest service in the morning and in the evening, there was a harvest supper and auction of produce in Austwick Parish Hall. A lovely meal was enjoyed by around 90 parishioners followed by the auction. It raised more than £470 for Manorlands and Age UK North Craven.

Barnoldswick Rotary club: Stunning photography of the Svalbard archipelago in the high Arctic delighted Barnoldswick and Earby Rotarians. Colin and Rhona Balls showed pictures, taken on a land and sea cruise in midnight sun territory. There was a surprising variety of colourful flora and a plethora of bird life from snow buntings to ptarmigan. The highlight came at the end with a polar bear and two cubs seen coming within camera range to inspect the visiting tourists.

Probus Club: Fifty-six members of West Craven Probus watched a series of films presented by Burnley Film Makers. Among the places visited were Greenland, with its tiny hamlets and no trees, and Iceland, with its geysers and mountain ranges.

Bentham Historical society: Sir John Kerr, chairman of the Ewecross Historical Society, welcomed guest speaker Gail Newsham to the first meeting of the season in Bentham Town Hall. Gail gave an enthusiastic and exciting illustrated account of a ladies football team, Dick Kerr’s Ladies, named after the owners of a northern munitions factory, Mr Dick and Mr Kerr. The team, formed during World War One, went on to win football matches all over the country and abroad. After about 40 years of success, the team was disbanded in the 1950s. At the October meeting, Kevin Illingworth will speak on Local Vernacular Architecture.

Bolton Abbey Church services: The services on Sunday are 8am Communion (said), 10.30am Sung Eucharist and 6.30pm Evening Prayer. Each Wednesday, there is a communion service at 10am.

Priory talk: Lisa Holmes, lead minister at Skipton Baptist Church, and Lucy Irven, the recently-appointed Skipton Food Bank manager, will give a lecture at Bolton Abbey Village Hall next Thursday, October 16, from 7pm. They will speak about the food bank movement in general and Skipton in particular.

Film night: Local charity Three Peaks for Palestine will host a film night on Tuesday, October 21, at Clapham Village Hall. Between 7.30pm and 10pm they will screen A World Not Ours 2012. The film is a portrait of the Palestinian refugee camp known as Ein El-Helweh. There will be a collection for Medical Aid for Palestinians.

Coniston Cold Young farmers: Last Tuesday Coniston Cold Young Farmers met at Dales Dairy at Grassington. Members were shown around the farm and dairy to see how milk is pasteurised and fed to the bottling plant where it is packed ready for delivery. Ellie Saxby thanked David and Michael Oversby for the tour and the Foresters Arms for the supper afterwards.

St Peter’s: On Sunday, the church will hold a Holy Communion at 9.30am.

Cononley Joan Nicholson, 01535 630872 St John’s: On Sunday, St John’s Church hold its harvest family service at 11am. The service will also include a baptism. During the first hymn, members of the congregation will be invited to bring their offerings of tinned food up to the altar for Keighley Salvation Army to distribute. On Tuesday, Cononley with Bradley Mothers’ Union will meet at the home of Olive Hodgson at 7.30pm. On Wednesday, there will be drop-in at the village institute from 2pm to 3.30pm.

Beer festival: Once again, the beer festival was a resounding success, with a full house on both Friday and Saturday. The institute committee would like to thank Doug Clark, who has organised the festival every year since it started, and everyone who helped.

Cricket club: The cricket club held an end-of-the-season race night which was a great success and raised £780. The money will be used for new equipment for the club.

Arts and crafts: Cononley will hold a Christmas Arts and Crafts Fair in the institute on Sunday, November 23. Watch out for more details nearer the date.

Cowling War commemoration: Cowling will contribute to the World War One centenary displays of memorabilia and information at Cross Hills Library over the next few weeks. The updated rolls of honour giving all the names of Cowling men who lost their lives in both world wars are now ready for framing and will be hung in the village’s five public buildings after this year’s Remembrance Service. It will take place at St Andrew’s Methodist Church at 10.30am on Sunday, November 9, and will be followed by the Act of Remembrance and the laying of wreaths at the Main Street recreation ground memorial. Another wreath will be placed on the memorial at Holy Trinity Church.

Companions: Alwyn Pickles will speak to the next meeting of Cowling Companions about Trawden Garden Festival and Chester Zoo. Everyone is welcome to the meeting on Wednesday from 2pm at Cowling Village Hall. Admission is £2.50 including homemade refreshments. Parish council: The parish council will meet tonight at 7.30pm in the village hall. The meeting will include land development matters, the appointment of a new member to fill the current causal vacancy and the future management of the nature reserve. Members of the public can register any complaints or concerns during the public participation portion of the meeting.

Embsay churches: St Mary’s will hold communion services on Sunday at 9.30am and Tuesday at 10.30am and a Smiley Faces toddler praise on Friday from 1.45pm until 3.15pm. The Methodist Chapel’s 10.30am Sunday service will be led by the Rev Janet Clasper. Every Tuesday morning, Friendship Club meets in the church hall for games, chat and fellowship.

Library talk: Following on from the success of its last library talk, the Upper Wharfedale Heritage Group is back to reveal another fascinating aspect of the locality. The hall will be open from 7.15pm for a chance to see the group’s display and the local history archives produced by the WI whilst enjoying refreshments. The talk starts at 8pm.

Village calendars: The 2015 Kildwick and Farnhill calendars will be on sale at the institute on Saturday between 11am and noon. Calendars are also available from any member of the committee. They cost £5.50 (£6 with an envelope) and all proceeds will go towards the upkeep of the institute.

History Group: The next meeting of the Farnhill and Kildwick Local History Group will take place on Monday, October 20, at 7pm in the institute. It will be a chance for everyone to preview some of the items that the group will be exhibiting at the Craven Remembers World War One commemoration event to be held in Skipton Library on November 11. Entry is free and there will be refreshments available. There will be original paintings and photography, sculpture, limited edition prints, cards, gifts, jewellery, kites and much more. All work is produced by local artists and there will be some demonstrations.

Jumble sale: The annual jumble sale held in the village hall raised about £2,200 for hall funds. Many thanks go to everyone who helped and supported the event. The money raised will go towards roof repairs.

Primary school: Class three pupils enjoyed their recent visit to Settle College’s open day. The school is delighted to welcome Morag Nixon from Giggleswick School and Bethany Campbell-Smithson from Lancaster and Morecambe College, who will be working part-time in school over the next few weeks as part of their voluntary placements. Year five pupils have returned from their residential visit to Humphrey Head Outdoor Centre where they received praise for their excellent involvement. From table-laying to rock climbing, they all participated fully and thanks go to parents for funding this very worthwhile visit and to the Brentwood Trust for subsidising the overall cost. Year six pupils have been learning in a different way to produce the fourth issue of Giggtastic Gazette. They have produced an extremely interesting publication.

She will spend time in all the classes and will also visit ChipMonks nursery, which have sponsored the Kwezana School garden project. She will also visit some Settle Stories events. Meanwhile pupils at Settle Primary have been sharing their studies of space and the stone age. They have also been telling the Kwezana students about their trip to Humphrey Head outdoor centre and their experiences of building and sailing their own rafts on Lake Coniston.

Guided walks: The Friends of the Settle-Carlisle line have arranged a number of guided walks for this weekend. The first, on Saturday, is a strenuous 15-mile walk, departing from Armathwaite at 11.07. Also, on Saturday, there will be an 11-mile moderate circular walk leaving Carnforth at 10am and a 10-mile walk from Dent to Ribblehead via Blea Moor, leaving Dent Station at 10.40. On Sunday, there will be another 11-mile strenuous walk from Dent to Ribblehead following a different route and departing from the station at 10.37. Storytelling festival: The fifth annual storytelling festival will take place this weekend at venues throughout the town. It features top storytellers from around the globe. The concert will start at 3pm at Langcliffe Institute and admission is £5 on the door, with accompanied children admitted free.

Messy church: The next messy church session will take place at St John’s Hall next Sunday, October 19. The session runs from 3.30pm to 5.30pm and includes a hot meal. It has the One World Week theme of Living Differently and will focus on the story of the man who wanted bigger barns.

Gardening Club: Settle Gardening Club will meet at Townhead Court on Wednesday, October 22, at 2pm for a talk on spring bulbs by Marguerite Hughes. All are welcome and there is a £3 admission fee for non-members.

One World Week: This year, as part of One World Week, there will be a simple meal at St Mary and St Michael’s Hall on Thursday, October 23, at 6.30pm. It will be followed by Ben Oldham, from CAFOD, speaking about the work helping those affected by climate change. Everyone is welcome, but it would help if people would let Chris Yates (822690) or Alison Tyas (822313) know if they intend coming for the meal. Chris and Alison would also welcome offers of produce from gardens or allotments for the meal. On Friday, October 24, there will be a prayer vigil for peace in Settle Parish Church at 10am.

Silsden Linda Berry, 01535 654643 Community showcase: Silsden Community Showcase will be held at St James’ Church Hall on Saturday from 9.30am to 12.30pm. This will be an opportunity for all the community voluntary groups who serve the town to showcase themselves. Refreshments will be served and a Tour de France presentation will be given. Baking demonstration: Next Saturday, October 18, at 2pm, Mike Armstrong, a master baker from Sainsbury’s, will hold a baking demonstration in Silsden Methodist Church. This will run for about two hours. Tickets are £5 from Twiggs Newsagents or Silsden Methodist Church.

War commemoration: Silsden AFC is finalising plans for a service to commemorate the centenary of the start of the First World War, to be held on Saturday, November 8, at the Angel Telecom Stadium. This will start at 1pm and will include Silsden Town Band, a group of singers, the Royal British Legion, local groups, league officials and civic dignitaries. Silsden Historical Society will provide a display. Following the service, there will be the scheduled football match (3pm kick off) for which the Silsden team has obtained permission to play in the original colours of the 1914 team, light blue and white stripes. A commemorative programme will be on sale and profits will go to the Royal British Legion. Amnesty International: Thanks go to all those who supported the recent coffee morning and campaign event. It raised £290 and 59 postcards were sent in support of the release of Filep Karma. The next meeting at Silsden Methodist Church is on Monday at 7.30pm.

Camera club: Silsden Camera Club met in St James’ Church Hall last Wednesday. Members brought along a variety of objects to practise close-up photography. Young farmers: Last Monday, Silsden with Skipton Young Farmers met at Mr and Mrs Ayrton’s farm in Embsay for dairy judging. The results were: girls -1 Lucy Ellison and Rebecca Stapleton, 2 Holly Preston, 3 Polly Throup; boys - 1 Tom Stapleton. The next meeting is a visit to Mr and Mrs Ormerod’s farm at West Marton.

Naturalists: Craven Naturalists’ and Scientific Association will welcome John Preston on Monday. Mr Preston, of the British Trust for Ornithology, will give a talk entitled Garden birds and the wider work of the BTO. Advanced motorists: Skipton and Craven Advanced Motorists Group held its first meeting of the winter season at the Three Links Club. Members had a presentation by Graham James from the De Lacy Motor Club which organises a number of well-known historic rallies. Graham spoke about the close links between motor sport and advanced road driving. He also showed some interesting film of well-known drivers competing and often getting into trouble. Graham was thanked by the group chairman Bob Rowles. The next meeting is at the Three Links on Tuesday, October 28, when the speaker will be an examiner for the Advanced Driving Test. Retired Men’s Forum: The second meeting of Skipton Retired Men’s Forum will take place on Tuesday at 10am at the Soroptimist Rooms when Ian Baxter will give an illustrated talk, Back to Berlin and Beyond.

Naval association: The Royal Naval Association has received an invitation from the Royal British Legion to join members for refreshments at the Three Links Club after the Remembrance Parade on November 9. This year’s march will take a slightly different route, ending in the town hall car park.

Fine arts: Skipton and Wharfedale Decorative and Fine Arts Society met in the town hall for a lecture on Catherine the Great of Russia and her Treasures. The speaker was Pamela Halford, an independent lecturer on Fine Arts. Catherine the Great was a German Princess , who became the Empress of all Russia in the 18th century. She collected jewellery, snuff boxes, diamonds, jewels, paintings and drawings.

Steeton Methodist Church: Steeton Methodist Church will hold a social, with a pie and peas supper, on Saturday from 6pm to 8.30pm. Admission is £5 for adults and £2 for children. If you wish to attend please sign the sheet in the foyer. On Sunday, the 10.30am service will be led by Janet Clark. There is a Junior Church every week at the same time as the service.

Flower club: Steeton Flower Club acting chairman Kath Egan introduced Sue Maddocks who entertained members with her wonderful demonstration, Autumn Leaves. Sue used innovative containers and created a colourful display of arrangements. The next meeting, on Thursday, October 23, at 7.30pm at Sutton Village Hall, will take the form of a skills night with the theme, Autumn Landscapes. Art exhibition: Members of Buckden Art Group have thanked all those who contributed to the success of their recent exhibition in the village institute. There was an excellent show of members’ work, with 150 paintings on view. Despite the cold weather, the show was well attended, with 30 paintings and 180 greeting cards being sold. Missing keys: The single old-fashioned key for the boiler room at St Michael and All Angels Church in Hubberholme went missing around June 27. Does anyone remember seeing it then? The key for the School Room, Buckden, has also been lost. This is on a largish piece of plywood and it went missing on gala day. Harvest festival: Harvest festival will be celebrated in Littondale on Sunday, firstly at St Oswald’s Church, Arncliffe, at 9.30am, then at Halton Gill at 3pm. Gifts of packets and tinned goods will be donated to the Salvation Army.

WI meeting: Kettlewell and District WI will hold its annual general meeting in the village hall on Tuesday.

Swimming club: Upper Wharfedale Swimming Club is open to new members. Based at the Upper Wharfedale School pool, it holds sessions for families and adults. Teaching classes are small. Concert club: The members of Upper Wharfedale Concert Club enjoyed an evening in Harrogate listening to the Halle Orchestra in the beautifully restored Royal Hall. Each year the club visits venues including the Alhambra in Bradford, Bridgewater Hall in Manchester and the Grand in Leeds. Later this season members will see One Man, Two Guvnors in Leeds and the Brussels Philharmonic Orchestra in Bradford. History group: The Rylstone Parish Local History Group will welcome Dr Bill Smith to its first meeting of the winter term at 7.30pm on Tuesday in Cracoe Village Hall. He will give a talk on Mr Tunstill’s Men - Craven’s volunteers in the Great War.
