Show meeting: The village show held its annual open meeting last Wednesday when next year’s schedule was agreed. Look out for classes in the next Parish Newsletter and the Craven Herald to give plenty of time for preparation.

Women’s Institute: Austwick WI held its annual general meeting. The president, Lizz Cook, thanked members and committee for all their help throughout the year. Lindsey Smith gave the secretary’s report and Sandra Wormington gave an account of the finances. Lizz will remain president for the coming year and, as there were no other nominations, the committee will be unchanged. After the main business, a box containing school memorabilia from Craven Museum created a lively discussion as did the “quirky” objects supplied by members. The next meeting on November 14 is a change to the programme and will now be a talk by Diane Allen from Magna Large Print Books.

Church news: On Sunday, there will be a Holy Communion at Austwick at 9.30am and a Taizé Service at Eldroth Church at 7pm. This is a candlelit service with periods of quiet for personal reflection.

Afternoon Fellowship: On Wednesday, the Afternoon Fellowship will hold its annual meeting in the parish hall at 1.30pm. It will be followed by a light-hearted talk by Chris Leeming on the trials and tribulations of teaching. It replaces the planned talk by Richard Nicholas entitled A trip to the Baltic by car.

Bradley Liz Zieboll, 01535 636369 Remembrance Sunday: Bradley’s Remembrance Sunday service will be held in the Peace Memorial Hall (Bradley Village Hall) at 10.30am on November 9. Fourteen of the 90 men from Bradley who went to fight in the war never returned. Of those who died, some have known graves whilst others are remembered on the memorials at Arras and Thiepval. The Rev John Lancaster, who is leading the service, would like to hear from any relatives of the men who died, in the hope that they may be willing to share in the Act of Remembrance by placing a cross on the war memorial. Activity day: Another fun filled theatre activity day for children is on offer at the village hall during autumn half term. Bethel Chapel: Bethel Chapel will host an Evening of Gospel Praise on Saturday at 7.30pm. All donations will go towards Angel Tree, which provides presents for prisoners’ children. Coffee morning: Aimee and Erin, granddaughters of Liz and Eric Mason, are holding a coffee morning in the village hall tomorrow between 10am and noon. They are raising funds for Children in Need. There will be a cake stall and a raffle. This will be the fourth year the youngsters have organised this event.

Quiz success: The recent quiz night at the village hall raised £390 for hall funds. Once again, the event was hugely enjoyable, run by quizmaster Stuart Marshall with a supper by Lorraine Wildman.

Newsletter Group: Clapham Newsletter Group will hold its annual meeting in the village hall on Monday at 7pm. New members are needed to ensure its continued success.

First World War: If your family was living in Clapham and the surrounding area during World War One and have any stories that have been handed down through the generations, Sue Mann on 51792 and Chrissie Bell on 51610 would like to hear from you. They are attempting to find out what life was like in the village when so many men had left to fight. They are planning to share the information in due course.

Coniston Cold Young Farmers: Coniston Cold Young Farmers held their annual general meeting at the Richard Tottie Memorial Hall at Coniston. New club president Janet Bolland chaired the meeting. Club treasurer James Bolland gave a finance report followed by the election of officers. Janet Bolland thanked outgoing president Gordon Beresford for his contribution to the club over the past three years. Next week’s meeting is public speaking at Coniston at 7.30pm.

Cononley Joan Nicholson, 01535 630872 St John’s: Last Sunday, a harvest family service with baptism was held with a congregation of about 90, including about 15 children, nearly filling the church. A large offering of tins for the Keighley Salvation Food Bank was donated. This Sunday, there is only the 8am service of Holy Communion. There is no 11am service, but all are encouraged to attend the 10.30am One World Week service at South Craven Baptist Church at Sutton-in-Craven – lifts are available, please contact the vicar or church warden. Cononley Singers: The group held its first social event on Saturday, a very enjoyable dinner at the Herriot Hotel, attended by 45 members. Retiring chairman Len Taylor and his wife were special guests. Tony Hamilton, choirmaster, thanked Len for his support since the choir started.

Budget meeting: The parish council will hold an open budget meeting at St Andrew’s Church on Saturday from 10am to noon. It will give villagers the chance to have their say on what the parish council funds next year. This year, the parish council backed the purchase and installation of the new play equipment at Middleton, supported plans to set up a community book exchange and is working with the recreation ground management committee to deliver improvements.

War exhibition: A multi-media exhibition by the Earby and District Local History Society will be held from 10am to 4pm on Saturday and Sunday at New Road Community Centre. The exhibition, titled Our First World War, includes exhibits, artefacts and film shows. The official opening at 10.30am on Saturday will include songs by pupils from Earby Springfield Primary School. There will be demonstrations of World War One weaponry, life in the trenches and how casualties were processed from front line to hospital at home. The exhibition continues on Sunday with Earby Brass Band performing at 2pm.

History society: Earby and District Local History Society will meet at 7.30pm on Tuesday at the New Road Community Centre. The guest speaker will be Gillian Waters who will give a talk titled Guy Fawkes - Yorkshireman. Visitors and new members are welcome.

Community centre: The Community Association will hold its annual meeting at 2pm on Monday in the Centenary Room of the New Road Community Centre. All associated with the centre are welcome. The Friday Luncheon Club will be closed on Fridays, October 24 and 31, as Rosemary Biggin is not available. St Peter’s: The preacher at Sunday’s 10:30am Holy Communion will be the Rev Wilf Robinson. There will be a games evening at 7.30pm on Monday. Next Sunday, October 26, in addition to the usual morning service, there will be a Songs of Praise at 4pm, followed by a sandwich tea provided by the church. Embsay with Eastby Andrew Wilson, 01756 790197 Parish council: Members considered a presentation from two Craven District Council officers on the draft Leeds and Liverpool Canal Access Development Plan. This document defines a coherent walking and cycling network to link communities such as Embsay using the canal as the core of the route. Following the presentation, it was agreed to support the general principle of increasing the level of walking and cycling in the area. It was agreed to hold a drop-in surgery in the village hall on Monday from 4pm to 8pm to enable members of the public to express their concerns and views about the draft Craven Local Plan to parish councillors. These views will then be considered when developing the parish council’s final submission statement. Members were informed about progress to fill two current casual vacancies and considered early action to recruit and appoint a new parish clerk. Suggestions and recommendations from members were considered on new services and activities for inclusion in the 2015-2016 annual budget and it was acknowledged there would be a likely increase in the budget and precept owing to new service demands. A number of village maintenance and road safety matters were addressed. These included the installation of a defibrillator near the village hall, grass cutting and attention to overhanging trees in the West Lane area of Embsay, a dangerous crossing on Skipton Road near Cross Bank, the positioning of a road safety mirror at the entrance to Embsay Railway Station and the installation of a plaque at the war memorial.

Embsay churches: On Sunday, St Mary’s 9.30am service will be a Family Communion. The Methodist Chapel service at 10.30am will be Holy Communion and will be led by Glennis Hobbs. On Tuesday at 10.30am there will be a service of Holy Communion at St Mary’s and on Friday a Smiley Faces toddler praise will take place from 1.45pm. The Friendship Club meets every Tuesday morning in the Methodist Church Hall to play a variety of table top games or to chat over a cup of tea or coffee. All are welcome.

Methodist Guild: Today’s Guild meeting will take the form of a lunch at 12.30pm which will be followed by a recital by the Ukulele Group.

Film night: The next village hall film night will be on Wednesday at 7.30pm when The Grand Budapest Hotel will be screened. This is a fantastical, magical and impossible comedy, which tells the story of Monsieur Gustave, the legendary concierge of the fashionable and elegant hotel between the wars. Admission is £4 and everyone is welcome.

Library talk: Following on from the huge success of its last library talk, the Upper Wharfedale Heritage Group will reveal another fascinating aspect of the locality. Its latest illustrated talk is entitled Saving Boundary Markers in the Parish of Embsay with Eastby and will take place in the village hall tomorrow. The hall will be open from 7.15pm for a chance to see the group’s display and the local history archives produced by the WI. The talk starts at 8pm.

Drop-in surgery: PCSO Ruth Pearson’s next Samuel Taylor drop-in surgery will be tomorrow between 2pm and 3pm.

Over 50s Forum: The Forum will meet in the village hall next Thursday, October 23, when Jean McHale will speak about Windowsill Gardening. History Group: The next meeting of the Farnhill and Kildwick Local History Group will take place on Monday at 7pm in the institute. It will be a chance for everyone to preview some of the items that the group will be exhibiting at the Craven Remembers World War One commemoration event to be held in Skipton Library on November 11. Harvest festival: The harvest festival at Grassington Congregational Church focused on the contrast between those who live in abundance and those who live in famine. The harvest gifts will go to Blenheim Project in Bradford, which helps homeless women and children, and further gifts will continue to be offered to the Skipton Food Bank.

Settle Gill O’Donnell, 01729 825639 Kwezana link: Ms Mveni, one of the teachers at Kwezana School, returned home to South Africa on Tuesday, full of enthusiasm and ideas to share following her time in Settle where she not only spent time with pupils at the primary school but also had the chance to enjoy some of the events in the Settle Storytelling Festival. She also visited the harvest service and lunch at St Alkelda’s Church and enjoyed trips around the local area.

Folk Club: The Three Peaks Folk Club will celebrate Trafalgar Weekend, with music and song. Tomorrow, there will be a club night at Settle Social Club from 6pm to midnight with free entry. Melodic delights: There will be a concert of classical and romantic music arranged for organ with some violin and woodwind parts on November 15 at Settle Parish Church. The event will start at 7.30pm and donations will go to the church organ fund.

Christmas lunch: Once again there will be a community Christmas Day lunch and tea at St John’s Hall. The event will run from 11.45am to 4.45pm and is open to all ages at the cost of £10 per head. Silsden Linda Berry, 01535 654643 Baking demonstration: On Saturday at 2pm, Mike Armstrong, a master baker from Sainsbury’s, will hold a baking demonstration in the Methodist Church. This will run for about two hours, giving time for the demonstration, sampling, a break for refreshments and questions and answers. Tickets are £5 from Twiggs Newsagents or Silsden Methodist Church.

War commemoration: Silsden AFC is finalising plans for a service to commemorate the centenary of the start of the First World War, on Saturday, November 8, at the Angel Telecom Stadium. This will start at 1pm and will include Silsden Town Band, the Royal British Legion, league officials and civic dignitaries. Silsden Historical Society will provide a display and there will be refreshments in the sports club. Following the service, there will be the scheduled football match (3pm kick off) for which the Silsden team has obtained permission to play in the original colours of the 1914 team, light blue and white stripes. A commemorative programme will be on sale with all the profits going to the Royal British Legion. For further information, email silsdenafc@hotmail.com History exhibition: The exhibition of Silsden’s Story In The Great War, first shown at the town hall in August, will be shown again during Remembrance Weekend when the Silsden Local History Group holds a coffee morning in the town hall on Saturday, November 8. Then, later in the day, a small selection from the exhibition will be transported to the Sports Club where Silsden AFC are hosting a remembrance ceremony. On sale at the coffee morning will be the children’s book Edward’s Diary - written by local teacher Anne Reay - and specially produced calendars and Christmas cards.

Camera Club: Silsden Camera Club met in St James Church Hall last Wednesday. The competition was Water’s Edge and the results were: 1 and 2 G Pickering,3 B Seymour. The club held its annual exhibition earlier this month, which included an excellent display of photographs by members.

Skipton History Society: The History Society kicked off its 2014/15 season with a lecture by Dr Kenneth Jackson on Skipton: Understanding the Urban Landscape. It focused on development within the Middletown and Gargrave Road districts of Skipton from 1870 to 1914. In Middletown, the release of extensive land by the Skipton Castle Estate enabled terrace houses to be built in phases to a regular and systematic plan. By contrast, the Gargrave area had already seen significant earlier mixed development and when plots of land became available, house building evolved in a more regular pattern with many more distinctive housing styles. The next meeting will be an illustrated lecture by Dr George Ingle on Textile Mills of the Yorkshire Dales and will take place in the Swadford Street Centre next Thursday, October 23, at 7.30pm.

Oddfellows: Skipton District Oddfellows will hold a Pointless quiz on Saturday. Enter a team of two people for £2.50 (including refreshments).There will be a lunchtime bingo session on Tuesday from noon. Bring your own sandwich and enjoy a bowl of homemade soup for £1. A table top sale will be held from 10am to 4pm next Saturday, October 25, and local Band Undercover will perform from 8pm on the same evening. Camera Club: The club’s first meeting gave members a chance to show their pictures taken during the summer. The main ones were of holidays both at home and abroad. The Tour de France also featured.

Retired Men’s Forum: Paul Kenny gave an illustrated talk entitled From Venice to Vesuvius, taking in the cities of Florence, Milan and Rome. He hopes to continue his journey south from Sorrento at a later date. Next week, David Jones will talk about Community Defibrillation.

Italian Circle: Skipton Italian Circle will meet at the Soroptimist Rooms, Otley Street, next Thursday, October 23, at 7.30pm. It will start with informal conversation and will be followed by an illustrated talk by Andrew Botherway on Marconi - one of Italy’s most famous men and the controversy surrounding his discoveries. Admission is £2 for members and £5 for visitors.

Speakers Club: The third meeting of the season provided members of Craven Speakers’ Club with the perfect opportunity to practise their evaluation skills. Eileen Ward delivered a speech titled Start Exploring. Five members then evaluated her speech. Sylvia Walker was declared the winner and will now go forward to compete at the area competition at Addingham Memorial Hall in November. After the coffee break, Val Ogden chaired a short topics session. The next meeting will be held on Monday at 7.45pm at the Soroptimists Rooms in Otley Street, Skipton.

Steeton Methodist Church: Steeton Methodist Church enjoyed a social and pie and peas supper on Saturday evening, which raised £168 for church funds. Thanks go to everyone who helped or just came along for a fun evening. Steeton Methodist Youth Club will meet on Tuesday at 6.30pm for a Superhero Disco. Entry will cost £1.50. The Evening Fellowship will meet on Wednesday at 7.30pm when the speaker will be Glenda Hunter from the National Trust who will give an illustrated talk, World Heritage Site, Fountains Abbey. Everyone is welcome. The service on Sunday at 10.30am will be taken by Rev Alan Raine when Holy Communion will be celebrated. There is a junior church every Sunday at the same time as the service.

Church news: This Sunday there will be a 10.30am service for One World Week at South Craven Baptist Church. There is no service at St Thomas’s Church.

Mothers’ Union: The Mothers’ Union will meet on Tuesday at 2pm in the community centre.

Art Club: On Wednesday, Sutton Art Club will meet at 7pm in the community centre for a demonstration of a seascape in pastels by Bryan Lancaster. Visitors are welcome.

Tosside Wedding fair: A wedding fair will be held at Tosside Community Hall next Saturday and Sunday, October 25 and 26, from 10am to 4pm. Everyone is welcome even if you are not getting married. For more information, call 01729 840272.

Craft sessions: Kettlewell Crafters have launched their new season in the village hall. Meetings take place on Thursdays from 9.30am. Ongoing craftwork or new projects may be taken and everyone is welcome.

Library van: The supermobile library van will visit the area on Wednesday. It will be Buckden car park from 10.30am to 12.30pm and in the national park car park at Kettlewell between 2pm and 4pm.

Church fundraiser: The next social fundraising event for St Oswald’s Church, Arncliffe, will be at Tony and Lynda Barker’s home, Ellershaw Farm, on Sunday. Afternoon tea will be served from 3pm to 5pm.

Working parties: The churchyards at St Mary’s Churches in Kettlewell and Conistone need sprucing up. It’s time to tidy up leaves, stow away the benches, check the gutters are clean and the steps are free from moss and to cut back the ivy. Working parties will be held on Saturday from 10am to noon.

Horticultural show: There was a good display of flowers, fruit and vegetables at Littondale Floral and Horticultural Show. Held in Amerdale Hall, Arncliffe, the event also included handicrafts, cakes, poultry, eggs and farm crops. Patsy Campbell won the trophy for the most points.

Theatre treat: Nobby Dimon and North Country Theatre return to Arncliffe next Thursday, October 23. They will perform A Month in the Country - based on the novel by JL Carr - at Amerdale Hall at 7.30pm. It is a haunting evocation of a past time. Tickets cost £10 (£5 for concessions) and are available from littondale.net Family history: The next meeting of the Wharfedale Family History Group will take place at 2.30 pm on Saturday at Threshfield Village Institute. Gillian Waters will talk about William and Sylvester Petyt. Members and non-members are welcome.

Wigglesworth Community centre: The Little Sister Band was brilliant on Saturday and plenty turned out to support them. It was a cracking evening. It is great to have such talent come to a small village. The artists were delighted with the welcome and enthusiastic response and thought the Old School was a great venue. Next Saturday, October 25, the craft group will hold a coffee morning from 10am to noon. It will have the usual refreshments, even bacon butties, along with a tombola and stalls selling Christmas related items. There is a whist and dominoes event on Wednesday, October 29.
