Raikes Road burial ground was opened in 1846 and closed 50 years later, becoming a neglected, overgrown site. A map of 1891 showed that there was a mortuary and C of E chapel. This has led in recent years to a group of enthusiasts excavating the site and the work is ongoing today. A study of the headstones indicates it was used by a wide variety of society and three examples are the grandparents of Rudyard Kipling, John Tasker, a Wesleyan Methodist who founded the Craven Herald, and a soldier hero of the Napoleonic Wars. The burial ground has become a nature reserve and it is hoped that it will eventually be opened to the public.
