Austwick Church held its annual Christmas Fayre last Saturday and despite the rain a good number enjoyed tea, cake, three raffles and the usual stalls. These ranged from handicrafts, Christmas gifts, cakes (from both Austwick and Eldroth), books and jigsaws, advance sales of Christmas trees and braces of pheasant, to the school PTA’s excellent tombola (every ticket a winner). A total of £1,200 was raised for church funds.

Bolton Abbey Priory Church: The services this Sunday are 8am Communion (said) and 10.30am Sung Eucharist. Please note that Evening Prayer is now held at the winter timing of 4.30pm. On the first Sunday of the month we hold our Liquid Family Service at 9.15 am. This is a fun service for all the family. Each Wednesday there is a Communion Service at 10am. All services are BCP. Parking for the 10.30am service is now in the Village Car Park, free of charge, so that the spaces by the Priory can be reserved for those less mobile.

Priory talks faith on the street: Andy Thomas, from The Church Action on Poverty, will talk today at 7pm in Bolton Abbey Village Hall. The Church Action on Poverty organisation is a national, ecumenical, Christian, social justice charity committed to tackling poverty in the UK. They work, in partnership with churches, with people in poverty themselves to find solutions, locally, nationally and globally. All are welcome.

Class three were winners of last weeks Walk to School, with 92 per cent of pupils either walking or parking and striding to school.

Christmas Fair: The Friends of Clapham School Parents’ Teacher Association will be holding their Christmas Fair in school on Saturday, December 6, from10amto noon. Admission is adults £2.50 (includes hot drink and mince pie), children free. The event will include home baking, cake stall, wreaths, raffle, Christmas gifts and a bacon and sausage butty stand. Coniston Cold Church news: On Sunday there will be Evening Service from 4pm in St Peter’s Church.

Young Farmers: During half-term break, 40 members of Coniston Cold Young Farmers travelled to Blackburn for an evening of ice skating at the town’s Ice Arena. Members met up with fellow club Rathmell and also Cartmel Young Farmers from Cumbria. The following week’s meeting was held at High Ground Farm at Hellifield for bonfire and fireworks night, hosted by the Beresford family. A business meeting and supper followed and the vote of thanks was given by Declan Hoare.

Embsay-with-Eastby Andrew Wilson, 01756 790197 Village Agents: Last Friday the Village Hall was the venue for a Village Agents meeting for those in the community who are full-time carers. Embsay’s agent is Maxine Bentley and she will be holding drop-in sessions every Friday afternoon between 2pm and 3pm starting tomorrow. She will be able to advise on issues such as claiming Attendance and Carers Allowance as well as practical advice about day to day concerns.

Pantomime: Tickets for Embsay Players’ pantomime ‘Billy and the Beanstalk’, which is being performed from Wednesday, November 19, to Saturday, November 22, are selling fast from the Paper Shop on Shires Lane. Prices are £6 for adults and £5 for children and OAPs and children. They can also be obtained from the Village Hall during rehearsals.

Churches in Embsay: Next Sunday’s service at the Methodist Chapel will be at 10.30am and will be led by Mr Brian Appleby, while at St. Mary’s Church Gift Day will be celebrated at a 9.30am Family Communion service. On Tuesday at St Mary’s there will be a service of Holy Communion at 10.30am with tea and coffee served afterwards. On the same day from 2pm to 4pm the church will be open for tea, coffee, home baking and conversation. Also on Tuesday morning in the Methodist Church Hall, time to play a variety of table-top games, or bring your knitting and just chat and enjoy the fellowship and enjoy a cuppa. All welcome, just bring yourself! The Methodist Chapel is also open every Monday between 2pm and 3.30pm. Anyone in the village seeking a time of peace and quiet is invited to pop in for a while.

Hot Chocolate Club: The club members enjoyed their annual bonfire night at Manby Castle on Friday, November 7. Thanks go to everybody who helped out on what was a very wet but enjoyable evening.

Parish council: The next meeting of the parish council will be held tonight at 7.30pm in the Village Hall. This meeting will include further consideration of local land development matters, approval of the 2015-2016 draft budget and input into the Craven District Council’s 2015-2016 budget consultation process. Members of the public are invited to attend the meeting and register any complaints or concerns etc. during the Public Participation portion of the meeting.

Gardening Club: ‘From the Aztecs to Big Business’ may seem an unlikely title for a talk to the Embsay-with-Eastby Village Gardening Club, but tomorrow at 7.30pm in the Village Hall, George Buckley will be taking us on an amazing illustrated journey that ranges from ancient Babylon to the Space Station and the planet Mars! On the way we will be visiting fabulous vertical gardens in Paris, and Italy, and some of the world’s biggest greenhouses in the Canary islands where sea water is converted into fresh water to enable huge quantities of tomatoes and other crops to be grown without soil, using hydroponic methods only. George uses these same methods in his Embsay garden, but the hydroponic method, which was known long, long ago, can turn deserts green, produce food for our rapidly growing world population and sustain life in outer space. Do come and enjoy what promises to be a fascinating evening. All are welcome and entry, which includes tea or coffee and biscuits at the end of the evening, is £3.00 for non-members and £1.50 for members.

Farnhill Methodist Church: The coffee morning held last Saturday raised £200 for church funds and £30 for the Gambian Schools Trust. On Thursday, December 4 at 7pm. there will be a talk about the work of the Gambia Schools Trust, which the church supports, given by Linda and David Gunn who regularly visit the Gambia to see the projects that donations help to achieve. This will be a very interesting evening and all are welcome. There will be supper at the end of the talk.

Over-50s: The Village Pump – the over 50s group - meets in the lower hall at Farnhill Methodist Church on Wednesday from 2pm to 3.30pm.

Gargrave Bowling Club: there will be a presentation of trophies evening on Wednesday from 8pm in the Mason’s Arms. Everybody is very welcome to attend.

Gargrave Christian Mission coffee morning and Christmas sale of work: This will be held on Saturday, November 22, between 10am and noon in the Village Hall and all the proceeds will be donated to Manorlands Hospice. There will be the usual stalls with the popular chocolate tombolas, as well as cake, produce, toys, books, bric-a-brac and raffle. Donations of jams, cakes, books, mince pies, etc will be welcome. The Village Hall shall be open from 9am so come along and have a chat with friends and a coffee. You will be very welcome.

Quiz night: This will take place on Saturday, November 29, from 8pm in the Village Hall. Quiz master Steve has compiled a fun quiz covering almost every subject with something for everyone, including a picture round. Each team can be up to four people and children are welcome to attend. The entry fee is £5 per person which will include a pie and pea supper. The quiz begins at 8pm, but the hall will be open at 7.30pm for early drinks from the fully licenced bar. Richard Whiteley Theatre: On November 27 to 29 students from Giggleswick School will be presenting their production of “A View from the Bridge”, Arthur Miller’s acclaimed play which exposes the myth behind the great American dream. Giggleswick Primary School: The school has recently received many emails, cards and letters of thanks from recipients of our small harvest parcels and some of these are now displayed with some of the harvest photographs in the hall. Well done to Tom, Hattie, Max, Edie, Mollie Joel, Amy, Freddie and Bailey from Y5, who worked hard during an intensive day of Bikeability and achieved Levels 1 and 2. Congratulations also to the 39 pupils who attended school every day during the first half of the autumn term, registering 100 per cent attendance. The school is currently planning ahead for Christmas will be participating in the Christmas lights switch-on in Settle on November 29 by singing on stage between 3.30pm and 3.45pm. Pupils will also be taking part in the nativity play at St Alkelda’s Church on December 24 at 6.30pm Gisburn Young Farmers: Members met for the annual dinner at The Calf’s Head at Worston on Friday. A delicious meal was enjoyed by all. The evening included a quiz by members and speeches from club leaders, which included a rundown on the past year’s events. A raffle to raise money for the club funds saw the evening to an end. The next meeting is a trip to Laser Combat at Clitheroe.

Grassington Sheila Denby, 01756 752605 Parish council: The Woodland Trust has informed Grassington Parish Council that it is no longer able to supply a Christmas tree for the village. Cllr John Benson was to be asked to investigate this purchase, with a limited cost of £100. A quote for weeding the rockery at the rear of the playgroup premises on the ground floor of the Octagon was to be sought. Outside decoration of the paintwork at the town hall/Devonshire Institute had been delayed and the work was now to be undertaken next spring. The parish council is calling for more dog waste bins in the village and the clerk was asked to approach Craven District Council for their consideration. Various sites were suggested. The parish council chairman, Michael Rooze, said the district council’s preferred sites were at road/lane edges so the waste could be collected more easily.

Hub library: Grassington Hub incorporates the village library as well as much-needed community services. The facility in Garrs Lane is open Monday to Friday, 10am to 6pm, and Saturdays 10am to 4pm, offering a full library service which is staffed on Tuesday and Friday afternoons by Andrea the librarian. Ann Wild, full-time manager, and dedicated volunteers are on hand to provide a friendly welcome.

Friendship Club: There will be a trip out for members of the Grassington Friendship Club on Thursday, November 20, to the White Rose Centre, to give them the opportunity of doing some Christmas shopping. Today Edwin Page will be their speaker in Church House from 2.15pm, with a talk which is entitled A Wandering Minstrel.

Defibrillator familiarisation session: Hellifield First Responders are holding a familiarisation session in the Black Horse from 7pm on Friday, November 21. Though limited to the first 15 people to apply, the evening will be an informal demonstration and practical, in dealing with defibrillator use, CPR, and treatment of cardiac arrest. In the case of the session being oversubscribed, the First Responder team will look at arranging another session before Christmas or early in the New Year. Women’s Institute: In October we had an interesting talk from Skipton-based Whitakers Chocolatiers, from its early beginnings to the present day. November’s meeting will be a talk on ‘Hearing Dogs’ by Jo Brooks. The competitions are ‘A Thimble’ and ‘A single flower/foliage’ from your garden. Ingleton Sue Brown, 01524241835 Parish council: At the November meeting of Ingleton Parish Council, a local trader raised the issue of the Post Office and stated that he was still interested in having it in his premises. It had been thought previously that there was no alternative to the community centre. The chairman will pursue this with the Post Office and the local MP. The matter of allotments was discussed and 12 letters requesting allotments were passed to the clerk. Cllr Weaire told members that the horticultural association would be willing to act as an umbrella for an allotment association and it was agreed that a list of suitable sites be produced for the next meeting. It was also agreed that the chairman will contact Cllr Ireton to pursue the additional sign at Oddies Lane to read formerly known as Mill Lane. Permission has been granted for change of use from restaurant and cafe to hot food takeaway at Simply Spicy. The clerk reported on recent works to the play area. Cllr Macaulay believed that one of the bolts on the basket swing was improperly repaired and it was agreed the clerk should check with the suppliers. It was also agree that M Coggins should be contacted regarding mending the fencing and fixing the coping stones. The Corsican Pine is due to be felled on November 24. Cllr Lis warned members of further possible cuts to the library services. He reported on the meeting for the regeneration of the village centre and it was agreed that Cllrs Weaire, Ward and Macaulay represent the parish council on the proposed action group to be set up with the Ingleton District Tradspeople’s Association, the Ingleton Rural Community Association and the Parochial Church Council.

On November 21, using a real magic lantern projector, poet and broadcaster Ian McMillan and documentary photographer Ian Beesley will tell the story of the First World War from the point of view of those who survived into old age. November 23 sees a visit by Skerryvore, a band from Tiree who blend traditional Celtic music with rock and funk. Guided walks: Friends of the Settle-Carlisle line have arranged a number of guided walks for the coming weekend.The first, on Saturday, is linked to the Lancaster to Morecambe line and is a nine-mile moderate walk from Lancaster to Morecambe via canal and coast paths. This leaves from Lancaster at 10.13am. The second walk explores Clapdale and Crummackdale and is a 12-mile moderately strenuous walk leaving Horton-in-Ribblesdale at 9.58am.Booking in advance is not required for the second or third walk but it is essential to bring a packed lunch and plenty to drink and to be correctly equipped for both. Settle-Kwezana Link: Pupils in Kwezana this week have been writing to Settle to tell their friends about the establishment of democracy in South Africa in April 1994 and how on April 27 all citizens were declared to be equal before the law, thus bringing to an end the rule of apartheid. They explained how, sadly, that there are still some whites’ schools in South Africa where there is some segregation.

Settle Photographic Club: At the next meeting on Monday at 7.30pm Rod and Margaret Smith will take a further look at the subject of composition with their presentation “An Extra Dimension”. The group meets at Townhead Court and visitors are welcome.

The Folly: The Folly is hosting a Christmas shopping and coffee morning on Tuesday, between 10am and noon. There will be lots of ideas for stocking fillers in the new Folly shop. To coincide with Settle’s Lights Switch-on on November 29, The Folly is once again running its popular free family activity session ‘Christmas Fun in The Folly’ from 1.30pm to 4pm.This year the theme is making games of all kinds, including board games involving dice made from wooden cubes and counters. Visitors will be able to design a game or they can go for a simpler version such as noughts and crosses. There will also be Christmas card making and a ‘golden’ tree for visitors to decorate. On top of all this, it is intended to hold a prize draw and award prizes to those people who have entered The Folly’s quizzes and other family activities throughout the year. Bring the family along for a warm and fun-filled afternoon before going along to the market place to see the lights. All welcome.

Three Peaks for Palestine: The next film night will be on November 19 at 7.30 pm at the Friends’ Meeting House when the film will be “Lemon Tree”. The group also invites you to join them in a day for Palestine on November 29 from10am to 3pm at the Friends’ Meeting House. There will be a range of Palestinian goods on sale including olive oil, dates, almonds, cous cous, zatar (wild herbs), soap and clothes. Additionally there will be hand-printed Christmas cards, knitted hats and scarves, jewellery on sale.

Settle Women’s Institute: At the November meeting Cherry Shiel gave an informative talk on family wills and answered many questions from members. On Thursday , November 20, the coach for the Harrogate Trip will leave Whitefriars at 9.30am. The December meeting on Wednesday , December 3, will be in the Catholic Church Hall.

Three Peaks Folk Club: The folk club meets next on November 22 at 9pm in Settle Social Club. There will be a range of floor singers and musicians.

Settle Orchestra: Settle Orchestra’s autumn concerts will take place at Settle College on November 22 and at Christ Church in Skipton on November 29. Both will start at 7.30pm and include works by Ravel, Poulenc and Bizet. The soloist will be mezzo soprano Rachel Maby. TRAMPS: There will be a showing of the German film “Lore” on November 26 at 7.45pm. Doors open at 7.15pm and admission is £5. The film is in German with English subtitles.

Christmas light switch on: This year’s Christmas lights switch on will take place on Saturday, November 29, in the Market Place. There will be a grotto for Santa Claus, live entertainment on stage, charity stalls, reindeer and fireworks. There will also be a live grand draw with top prize of £500. The event is from 3pm to about 5.15pm and will be followed by a family disco.

All sorts market: There will be an all sorts market in Victoria Hall on Saturday, November 29, from 9.30am to 4pm. Stalls are currently available, please contact 017239 823867 for further details.

Band concert: The annual concert by Giggleswick and Settle Brass Band at Holy Ascension Church, Settle, will this year take place on Sunday, November 30, at 7.30pm.

The Witch That Nicked Christmas: Penned by Mike Harding and performed by Settle’s newest amateur dramatics group, Take Two, “The Witch That Nicked Christmas” will be performed at Victoria Hall on December 3 to 5 at 7.30pm. Tickets via Victoria Hall box office on 01729 825718.

Charity dance: This year’s Christmas charity dance will take place on December 6 at St Mary and St Michael Parish Hall. The dance will run from 8pm to 11.30pm. There will be a Jacobs Join Supper and all proceeds will go to Macmillan Cancer Care. The annual New Year’s Eve charity dance will take place at the Victoria Hall on December 31 from 8pm to after midnight. Again, there will be a Jacobs Join supper and all proceeds from this event will go to support Victoria Hall.

First on Friday night will be a nostalgic evening with music from the 40s and 50s, which will start at 8pm in the Sunny Bank Social Club. Then on Saturday the Halifax Gilbert & Sullivan society will perform the concert version of the Pirates of Penzance at Silsden Methodist Church at 2.30pm. Skipton Embroiderers’ Guild: Members of the Embroiderers’ Guild will hold a Christmas stitching taster workshop in Christ Church Hall on Saturday from 10am to 3pm. This is an opportunity for all the family to join together to make star decorations, heart brooches, star bunting or a button sampler. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult, and all materials will be provided. Drinks and biscuits will be available for a donation, but if you wish to stay, please bring your own lunch. Upper Wharfedale Sheila Denby, 01756 752605 Children’s Society: Pamela Wilkinson, of Threshfield, has thanked all those box holders for the Children’s Society who helped in getting the August/September collection completed and, in particular, to Grassington Newsagents for their assistance. The amount collected was £664.79, including donations. “The total donated to our group in 2014 is £1,208.51. The next collection will be in spring, when those boxes marked April/May are collected,” she said.

Sponsored walk: More than 100 people from the whole community and of all ages turned out to support Cracoe School’s first sponsored walk, which raised £1,165 for the school, with walkers from Burnsall adding £187 for their school.

Christmas Stars: The Christmas Stars Appeal is in progress at Hubberholme Church. Anyone who would like to dedicate a star in remembrance of a loved one will find stars in a bowl in the church. Dedications can be written on a star and placed on the little tree, ready to be transferred later to the large Christmas tree. A suggested donation of £2-plus per star can be placed in a box on the side table. History meeting: At the first local history meeting of the season Bill Smith, a history teacher at Skipton Academy, enthralled his audience with his talk on Tunstill’s Men.

Women’s Institute: At last month’s Rylstone WI group meeting all members made beadwork snowflakes under the direction speaker Alison Brain, an expert in North American beadwork. Members decided to enter the Dickensian Christmas Tree Festival and the handmade snowflakes will solve the problem of decorating the tree. Mary Wilkinson will be the group’s delegate for the centennial AGM at the Royal Albert Hall next June. The Gamekeeper’s Inn, at Long Ashes, will be the venue for the Christmas meal on December 11.

Children’s Society: The annual coffee morning for the Children’s Society will be held at Fold Farm, Kettlewell, on Saturday. The society can make use of old mobile phones and Barbara Lambert will be glad to receive any people can donate.
