POPULAR Craven Herald community correspondent Margaret Almond has died following a short illness.

Margaret, who was 85, had covered Sutton, Cross Hills and Glusburn for the newspaper for many years.

She was born in Keighley and grew up in the town.

After attending Keighley Art School she became a seamstress, and went on to create many wedding and bridesmaid outfits during her dressmaking career.

Margaret was married, to Donald, in June 1950.

They lived at Riddlesden and Steeton before moving to Sutton in 1962, where Margaret remained until her death.

The couple had a wide circle of friends they met through church, work and holidays they enjoyed, particularly in Scotland and the Lake District.

Margaret was a member of Sutton Women's Institute for at least 20 years, serving for part of that time as treasurer.

She was also a member of, and exhibited with, the village art club and attended many coffee mornings and other events for local organisations.

Donald died in 2008, but Margaret continued with her various hobbies and membership of community groups.

"Margaret was a stalwart community correspondent with the Craven Herald for many years," said editor Andrew Hitchon.

"She would diligently phone in her copy every week without fail.

"But not only was she a much valued correspondent, she was a lovely lady with a smashing sense of humour. She will be greatly missed."

Margaret leaves three daughters, two grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

The funeral is due to take place at Oakworth Crematorium on Monday, at 12.15pm.
