Austwick Derek and Celia Coultherd, 015242 51215 Cuckoo workshop: A cuckoo workshop will be held in the parish hall on Sunday from 2.30pm when everyone is welcome to help make cuckoos for the Austwick Street Market and Cuckoo Festival. The village plans to keep the Austwick cuckoo tradition alive with cuckoos made from flower pots. Materials (and tea and cakes) will be provided free of charge.

Society meeting: The next meeting of the Austwick Field and Local History Society is in the parish hall on Wednesday at 7.30pm. Edward Downs will talk about Work as a Forester in the Yorkshire Dales. Visitors are welcome for an admission charge of £2.

Parish walk: The monthly parish walk led by Canon Ian Greenhalgh will take place on Saturday. Participants should meet at Austwick Church at 9.30am.

Barnoldswick Probus Club: Fifty-five West Craven Probus members were taken to Peru, in a slideshow presented by Stuart James. It started in the middle of Peru and included a climb up the Andes, before reaching an Inca settlement. John Dodd gave the vote of thanks.

Bentham Historical Society: Sir John Kerr, chairman of the Ewecross Historical Society, welcomed guest speaker Dr John Dwyer, former medical officer of health for the Morecambe Bay area for 25 years. Dr Dwyer gave an amusing and fascinating illustrated account of Two Epidemics in the Lancaster area, one in 1881 and one in 1981. He showed the conditions in Galgate in 1879 when typhoid broke out. The medical officer of health at that time mapped the location of each case with relevance to the 17 wells and found one which was contaminated. Dr Dwyer himself played the detective in 1981 when Legionnaires disease was found in workers at phase one of Heysham Power Station. He too tracked the source to one area and, with two colleagues, found that three cooling towers were emitting contaminated spray. The chairman thanked Dr Dwyer. The AGM will be on April 27 and outings have been arranged for June 27 and August 8.

Bolton Abbey Priory Church: Sunday’s services include an 8am Communion and a 10.30am Sung Eucharist, which will be followed by the priory’s annual general meeting. Evensong has now reverted to the summer time of 6.30pm. Each Wednesday, there is a Communion service at 10am.

Concert series: The 2015 Priory Concert Series starts next Friday, April 17, with a performance by Aireborough Gilbert and Sullivan Society. It will start at 7.30pm.

Neighbourhood Planning Group: The Bradley Neighbourhood planning group has been very busy, meeting twice monthly. There was an excellent response to the December consultation, with a fairly even split for and against the three proposed housing sites. In order to make the proposals as legally watertight as possible, the group’s consultant has advised members to reassess all possible housing sites. He is now preparing the detailed “pre-submission” draft plan. It is hoped to have this ready for a six-week public consultation, starting with a public meeting before the summer holidays.

Clapham Rory-Joe Daniels, 015242 51135 Parish council: The parish council hosted the village’s annual parish meeting, which was well attended. Reports were given by the parish council, Craven District Council, North Yorkshire County Council, Clapham Community Shop Ltd, Clapham Hyperfast (broadband) group, the Play Park, Sustainability Group, Clapham Development Association, St James’ Parochial Church Council, and Ingham and Yorke representing Ingleborough Estate. The developers of the former Dalesview Garage site, McConnell Homes Ltd, will soon present detailed planning drawings to Craven District Council. The council congratulated Clapham Community Shop Ltd for garnering the support needed to open the village shop. Clapham Hyperfast recently held a meeting in Newby to promote the advantages of hyperfast broadband and will soon do the same in Clapham. Trench digging to lay the fibre network started last week. A new parish caretaker has started work and will carry out maintenance around the parish. The Forest of Bowland AONB has donated £1,400 for maintenance works on the AONB side of the parish. Plans are afoot to install a noticeboard at Clapham Station and improve drainage to Keasden Church car park. J Hartley and Sons have been contracted to carry out grass cutting in St James’ Churchyard. The parish council will next meet in the village hall on Tuesday, April 28, at 7.30pm.

Coffee morning: There will be a coffee morning to raise funds for Bentham Pet Rescue and Craven Cat Rescue in Clapham Village Hall on Saturday from 10am to noon. On offer will be homemade cakes, a raffle and tombola as well as stalls selling bric-a-brac, books and jigsaws.

Clean up: A litter-pick around Clapham has been organised by Clapham Development Association. It will take place on Tuesday, April 21, between 2pm and 4pm. More volunteers would be greatly appreciated. The team will meet on the corner where the Green meets Old Road, next to Richard Sexton’s shop. Tennis Club: Due to a dwindling membership, Clapham Tennis Club has decided to make its annual membership free for 2015. This is an attempt to promote the playing of tennis at this under-used amenity. However after this year the court is likely to need professional cleaning and repainting, which does cost. The club hopes that by opening the court up to all, a new committee can be formed to help develop the facility.

Jaywalkers: Tickets are available from the Post Office for the Jaywalkers’ Month of Sundays, which will be performed at the institute on Friday, May 8, at 7.30pm. It is a superb play by Bob Larbey who wrote several TV sitcom hits including Ever Decreasing Circles. Tickets cost £7.

Spring fair: On Saturday, St Mary’s spring fair will be held in the village hall from 11am until 2pm. This will be an event for all ages. There will be a seed and plant swap, a children’s corner, a cakes and produce stall, games and books, gifts and Fairtrade produce as well as a café serving soup and rolls and bacon or sausage butties.

Gardening Club: In March, members welcomed Les Foden from Morecambe. A show judge for dahlias and a newspaper gardening correspondent, he gave a talk full of sound practical gardening tips. Tomorrow, at 7.30pm, the club has its next monthly meeting when the speaker will be Marguerite Hughes. She is also a horticultural tutor and garden designer based in central Lancashire and her talk - Scented Plants for Every Season - will be illustrated with plants and materials from her one-acre garden.

Garden trip: Hellifield Area Allotments and Gardens Association will hold its annual visit to RHS Harlow Carr in Harrogate next Saturday, April 18. To cover the cost of the minibus, there will be a charge of £4 for members and £5 non-members. Entry to the gardens is free of charge as long as the group enters the garden together. Gallery on the Green: The new exhibition, Click, will open at Gallery on the Green on Saturday. This will be feature the work of Paul Rogers and Roger Taylor. The exhibition will feature images which are observations on the theatre of photography.

Guided walks: Three guided walks have been organised by the Friends of Settle- Carlisle railway for this weekend. The first, on Saturday, is a 14-mile strenuous walk from Ribblehead to Ingleton, departing Ribblehead at 10.06 and timed to link to the service bus from Ingleton to Settle on the return journey. The second walk, also on Saturday, is a Garsdale circular walk. This leaves Garsdale at 10.35am and is an eight-mile moderate walk. On Sunday, there is a seven-mile moderate walk in the vicinity of Ribblehead, examining the geology of the area. This will leave Ribblehead at 10.27am. No reservation is necessary, but participants should ensure that they are appropriately clothed, carry a packed lunch where required and have suitable footwear. Sing-along: Settle U3A's singing for pleasure group invites you to join them for a sing-along session on Wednesday at 2pm in St John's Hall. There will be tea, coffee and biscuits available in exchange for a donation. All are welcome.

Hustings: With the General Election next month, Churches Together in Settle and District has arranged a hustings event next Friday, April 17, from 7pm to 9pm at St John's Church. All the candidates are planning to take part and the event is open to everyone from the local community. There will be an opportunity to put questions to the candidates and these should be submitted in writing prior to the meeting to John Diggles at johnd@abtsound.co.uk no later than 6pm on next Thursday. Settle Stories: Settle Stories will join forces with Settle Library to celebrating World Book Night on Thursday, April 23, at 6.30pm. There will be free books and a chance to enjoy storytime with storytellers Alia Alzougbi and Sita Brand. Sita and Alia will delight you with tales from around the world. There will be free refreshments, a chance to discover the new library plus the opportunity to go on a book giveaway around Settle. This event is suitable for those aged eight and over.

Quiz night: A quiz night will be held at Settle Rugby Club on Friday, April 24, under the guidance of local quiz master Stuart Marshall. The cost is £5 per person, including supper. Women's Institute: New president Mary Hindle welcomed federation chairman Julie Clarke as the guest speaker. She gave a light-hearted yet informative account of her life in farming in a remote part of Coverdale. Seven members of Settle’s twin WI, Broughton cum Elslack, attended for the 26th birthday celebration which followed. It was agreed that a bench be set up in a Settle playground to commemorate the WI centenary.

Film night: TRAMPS will continue its popular foreign film season with the screening of The First Grader in Victoria Hall on Wednesday, April 29. This is an inspiring story from Kenya. The film will start at 7.45pm and admission is £5.
