Instead the group met at Herriot’s Hotel, Skipton. A guest at the meeting was Elizabeth Evans, from the North East Area of NADFAS. The speaker was Gillian Hovell, who describes herself as a “muddy archaeologist, classical historian, prehistorian, and lover of Latin”. Her topic was titled Not Just a Pile of Old Stones and, illustrating her lecture with slides of artifacts dating from 6000BC until Roman times, she took members on a tour of the lands around the Mediterranean where European Art and Culture began. Her subject ranged through Mesopotamia, Bronze Age, Minoan and Greek culture, showing how traders took examples of art around the known world, and the styles of art and architecture developed over time. A knowledgeable and exciting lecture was much enjoyed by members and guests. Next month’s lecture will be back at the town hall.
