Cowling Moonrakers: Due to the cold and inclement weather, the intended May visit to Cowling Hill Methodists, to survey the graveyard was cancelled. The group has, fortuitously, been given an earlier survey of gravestones, which can be studied in future, making a visit unnecessary at this time. At the meeting, a list of ‘stone workers’ in the parish during the 19th century was presented. This is to be typed up and studied at a future meeting as part of the group’s research into local quarrying. A new display was discussed and it was decided that it should be worked on at the June and July meetings so that it can be ready for the Cowling Gala at the end of July. Members remembered the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Cunard Liner RMS Lusitania by a German U-boat, causing the death of 1,198 passengers and crew. There was a Cowling link to this disaster. One of the victims, Edwin Moore, a foreman pattern maker, was on his way to visit his daughter, Mary Anne Moore who lived at Lane Ends, Cowling. Cllr M Scarffe was appointed representative for YLCA for a further year. It was agreed that the meetings should continue to be held monthly on the first Tuesday in the month. District councillor Pat Fairbank and county and district representative Patrick Mulligan both apologised for the recent problems with waste management regarding collection points in parts of Farnhill. Parish councillors said that they were appalled by the lack of communication from Craven District Council and their non-attendance at the annual parish meeting. A lot of parishioners had come to the meeting especially to hear about the collection points and how it would affect them. The residents concerned had only been given a week’s notice. It was stated that the collection points had not been given enough thought as one of them was on private property. The clerk is to draft a letter of complaint and will ask whether a risk assessment was carried out as some of the streets are very steep and the residents are elderly. NYCC Highways have said that erecting warning signs at the new pedestrian refuge at the A629 crossroads would set an unnecessary precedent. Kildwick Parish Meeting has confirmed that Farnhill Parish Council can install a lantern-style light at the agreed site near Parson’s Bridge. An issue was raised about a nearby tree which would probably need to be trimmed when the light is erected and the clerk is to ask NYCC to assess the site. Chris Lee from the Canal & River Trust has responded regarding the licence for feeder pillar for Christmas tree connection. He said the trust’s engineers had no objection as long as boaters could not couple up to the mains supply, the supply was to a lockable cabinet in a safe location and the supply was limited to November to January - in other words, when the Christmas tree lights were in use. The clerk is to ask for an estimate of the legal costs involved. A new catch has now been fitted on the gate at the play area and Cllr T Bramley has treated the grass with weed and feed and will fit some rubber stops to the bottom gate. The work to the path at the Arbour was discussed and it was agreed to amend the plan and reduce the section of wall needed by the steps, to regrade the bank more and to consider making a small area at the top for a seat. The clerk is to ask the contractors to meet the parish council to discuss the changes and supply amended quotes. Work will continue as planned with the clearance and the area to the right of the heather will be raked down and the debris cleared ready for further planting. The parish council agreed that some bluebells and daffodils should be planted on the left hand side of the Lower Arbour by the track. Cllr R Bramley reported that the website had had 790 hits over the past month and new articles had been added.
