Austwick: Derek and Celia Coultherd, 015242 51215: Bowling Club: Austwick Bowling Club held a club competition on Saturday. Members competed for the Triangle Trophy and the winner was K Morphet, with D Burns as runner-up. This Saturday, there is another club competition for the Sanderson Trophy. This is a doubles event – choose your own partner, two ladies or two men or one of each.

Church news: On Sunday, there will be Holy Communion services at Austwick and Eldroth at 9.30am. On Monday, Austwick Parochial Church Council will meet at 7.30pm in the vicarage.

Village Show: This year’s Austwick Village Show will take place on Saturday, August 1, at 2pm in the parish hall. Schedules are now available from Crossleigh Stores or the secretary, Sue Dewhirst. Entry forms must be submitted by 8pm on Monday, July 27, so please give some thought to which classes you could enter.

Women’s Institute: Robert Phillips was the guest speaker at the June meeting of Austwick WI. He talked about his Hellifield Highland Beef cattle which first arrived at Green Farm in March 2002, following the sale of his original dairy herd. The Highland cattle can usually be seen grazing above Malham Cove as part of The Limestone Country Project. Next Thursday, July 9, there will be a garden meeting at Brunton House, courtesy of John and Angela Rogers.

Summer lunch: A summer lunch will be held at Austwick Hall on Sunday from 12.30pm to 2.30pm. Weather permitting, diners will be able to enjoy lunch outside. Tickets cost £8 for adults and £4 for under 16s, which includes a hot pork bap or a vegetarian option, strawberries and cream and a glass of wine or soft drink. Tickets are available from the vicar or Pam Smith.

Barnoldswick: Probus Club: Sixty members of West Craven Probus were treated to some history of local scenes. The show was presented by Harold Hoggarth and included shots of Hardcastle Crags, Wycoller and some lost villages. This was an excellent presentation. Chairman John Dodd closed the meeting by asking all of the members to show their appreciation with an enthusiastic round of applause. This Tuesday, Christine Bradley will give a talk, Family History, 21st Century. The group meets at St Joseph’s Community Centre at 10am.

Bolton Abbey: Mystery play: Follow the players through the ruins of Bolton Abbey Priory to reveal the life of Christ in 12 scenes. Based on the tradition of medieval mystery plays, the performances will vividly bring to life some of the best-known events in the life of Christ. Starting and finishing in the Priory Church, the play will take the audience to various locations, including the River Wharfe. Performances will take place on Saturday and Sunday at 2pm.

Priory Church: The services this Sunday are 8am Communion (said), a 9.15am liquid family service – a fun service for all ages – and a 10.30am Sung Eucharist. At this service, the congregation will welcome new curate Jonathan Cain, who is due to be ordained in Ripon Cathedral on Saturday at 3pm. There will be no Evening Prayer because of the Mystery Play at 2pm. On Wednesday, there is a said communion service at 10am. All services are the Book of Common Prayer.

Bradley: Liz Zieboll, 01535 636369: Coffee morning: Everyone is welcome at the Methodist Church coffee morning on Saturday. It takes place in the church hall between 10am and 11.30am and includes home baking.

School news: The school is holding its sports day and summer fair this Saturday. Everyone in the community is invited to come along and join in the fun, which starts at 11am. Classes one and two had an exciting visit to the Sea Life Centre and Lytham St Anne’s last week.

Film Club: The next showing from film club will be Avenger’s Assemble (11+) on Tuesday. This is a 2012 American super hero film based on the Marvel Comics superhero team. It will be shown in the school hall at 6pm. Everyone is welcome – entrance is free and refreshments are available to buy. Children under 12 should be accompanied. More people, particularly younger members of the community, are also needed to help run Film Club and to suggest ways of moving it forward – if you are interested, please email bradleyfilmclub@gmail.com.

Family Day: There will be a meeting of the Family Show Day committee at 7pm next Thursday, July 9, in the village hall meeting room. The committee is looking for a show king/queen and two princes/princesses. Children who either live in Bradley or attend Bradley School, Bradley Brownies or Bradley Rainbows are eligible to enter. Entry forms are available at the village shop and completed entries should be returned to the shop by July 12. There is also a competition for children to design a poster to advertise show day – entries should be A4 sized and can be handed in at school.

Open Gardens: Gargrave’s open gardens event will take place between 11am and 5pm on Saturday. Admission is £3 in advance (tickets are available from Twin Locks Garden Centre or Crossgates) or £4 on the day with children being admitted free of charge (no dogs please). There are a record 30 gardens open this year – all Gargrave ones are within walking distance and there is a bonus pair in Bell Busk. There will be live music at many of the gardens on show and lunches, refreshments, ice creams, a children’s quiz, tombola and plants are available in the village hall from 10am. Duck race: Gargrave’s annual duck race and family fun day will take place on Sunday from noon on the village Middle Green. Organised by the Primary School’s PTA, the event will be a fun day for the whole family and will include hot food, strawberries and cream, balloon modelling, face painting, tombola and a table top sale, finishing with the ducks racing at 3pm. All are welcome to attend. Duck tickets will be on sale in Gargrave Co-op in the run up to the event. The winner of the duck race will receive £100, with runners-up receiving £75, £50 and £25. All are welcome.

Swing band: The Nostalgia Swing band will be appearing at Gargrave Village Hall on the afternoon of Sunday, August 2. The 17-piece band and its female vocalist, Beverley, all live in the Ramsbottom area. A few months ago they played at Carleton Village Hall and are making a welcome return to Craven. They play music from the 30s, 40s and 50s with a classic big band sound. There will be lots of informal seating around tables but there will also be space on the dance floor for anyone wishing to dance. Tickets are priced at £10 for adults and £5 for under 16s. Special song requests may also be made, but the organisers cannot guarantee all will be played.

Grassington: Sheila Denby: Gills Top: The monthly coffee morning at Gills Top – the Anchor home on Scar Street – will take place tomorrow from 10.30am. Homemade cakes will be on offer, along with a raffle. And the home will hold Lazy Saturday morning events every weekend until October. For a fee of £2, visitors can enjoy a bacon butty and a hot drink.

Langcliffe: Helen Jarvis, 01729 825303: Nepal money: Langcliffe Kennels and Cattery owners, Duncan and Judith Sugden, have raised £360 to help those whose lives have been devastated by the earthquake in Nepal. Duncan and Judith provided extra dog walks and donated the price of these. Some customers made donations and the Sugdens wish to thank them and those who took up the offer of extra walks for their dogs. The money has gone to the Red Cross Nepal Earthquake Appeal. Favourite recipes: The institute committee has invited residents and all those who contributed to the Langcliffe Favourite Recipes book to a celebratory launch on at 7pm tomorrow. Whist drive: At the recent whist drive held in aid of church funds, the MC was Mr R Middleton. Homemade suppers were served in the interval. There was also a raffle. Winners were: ladies - 1 B Garnett, 2 D Pullen, 3 M Wellock, booby J Jebson; men - 1 M Wright, 2 W Gwinnell, 3 E Morphet, booby V Jones. The next whist drive will be held next Friday, July 10, in the Institute. Admission is £2, including supper.

Long Preston: Heather Thomas-Smith, 01729 840113: Annual meeting: The 2015 annual general meeting of the Playing Fields Association will take place in the village hall on Thursday, July 30, starting at 7pm.

The meeting will deal with the election/re-election of officers and trustees; the adoption of proposed new constitution; and the proposal to surrender the lease of the playing field. All Long Preston residents aged 14 or older are entitled to attend.

Lothersdale: Young Farmers: Lothersdale Young Farmers held a car treasure hunt around the Lothersdale area which was set by the Tidswell family. First place went to the Fieldhouse family, with Janice and Anna second and Leslie, Matthew and Mrs Hall third. Some members attended the Yorkshire show judging at Askham Bryan, York. Kelly Maltby came third in the inter dairy section and third in senior lambs. The club came fourth in cattle and was fifth overall.

Over 60s: Thirty three members attended the meeting in the village hall when the speaker was Bill Honeywell from Clitheroe. Unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances, Bill was unable to give the talk which he had planned so instead he talked about his life outside work. He told how he was originally a rally driver before retiring and becoming a navigator. In a change of direction he then took up cycling and cycled all around, Britain, Europe and America. Members were informed that one of their members had been admitted to Manorlands and it was agreed to take a collection for the hospice which raised £50. The next meeting is on Wednesday when Malcolm Renninson will host a Yorkshire Quiz.

Rathmell: Elaine Illingworth, 01729 840087: Thursday Club: Twenty members from Rathmell Thursday Club will meet up in the Reading Room today, for lunch at 12.30pm. It will be followed by a talk, Inside Cambodia and China, by Jane Reas.

Young Farmers: Rathmell Young Farmers enjoyed an interesting and informative visit to Guy Machinery at Gisburn, hosted by Andy Belt and Gary Robinson. Members were shown around the workshops and stores and took part in the quiz about the business and the identification of parts and valuation of machines. The overall winner was Charlotte Booth who was presented with a Valtra boilersuit. Runner-up James Bradley and third-placed Anna Booth both received a DVD featuring Guy contractors. A vote of thanks was given by Liam Halliday.

Settle: Gill O’Donnell, 01729 825639: Guided walks: The Friends of Settle-Carlisle line have organised a series of guided walks. The first is on Saturday and is a very strenuous walk leaving Horton-in-Ribblesdale at 9.58am. The route is over rough terrain and will take in Plover Hill, Foxup, Cosh Knott, High Birkwith Moor and Sell Gill Holes. Also on Saturday, there is a 12-mile circular walk from Kirkby Stephen leaving at 10.34am, while, on Sunday, there will be a seven mile from Keld to Gunnerside. It will set off from Ribblehead at 10.27 and walkers will use the service bus to get to Keld. There will also be Ribblehead heritage tours on Wednesday. These will look at the archaeology of the sites and the history of the viaduct itself. To join a tour, meet at the Heritage Centre on Ribblehead Station at 10.25am. One tour will last about two hours and will visit the viaduct site, crossing rough moorland. A longer tour is available (also starting at 10.25am) which, after visiting the viaduct continues past the Blea Moor signal box and onto view the southern entrance of Blea Moor tunnel. Anyone joining this longer tour should bring with them a packed lunch. Tours are free of charge. No reservation is necessary, but all participants should ensure that they are appropriately clothed, carry a packed lunch where required and have suitable footwear. Victoria Hall: Guest artistes at the First Sunday Folk event this weekend will be The Mighty Doonans. Next Saturday, July 11, Sita Brand, director of Settle Stories, will present Memories of an Indian Childhood, presenting an opportunity to be transported to Bombay. Slowly the light-hearted stories about friendships and games give way to darker more painful memories, including her father’s gruelling exodus at the onset of the Second World War Two and later the Indian Emergency, precipitating the need to leave India and come to Britain. Flowerpot Festival: Following last year’s successful flowerpot festival, the event is being repeated and members of the public, organisations, groups and businesses are invited to create and display flowerpot characters to enliven the town. The festival will run until September 6.

Gallery on the Green: Call Me – the new exhibition at the Gallery on the Green – opened on Saturday and will run until August 15. Ellen Bell and Jo Hamill’s new installation is an elegant, yet whimsical written collage of notable literary telephone dialogues and looks at the nostalgic days of the phone box. Bell and Hamill’s transparent book-like structure plays with the notion of a line of communication that is sometimes clear and at other times obscure.

Charity dance: The next charity dance will take place at St Mary and St Michael Parish Hall on Saturday. This will run from 8pm to 11.30pm and all proceeds will go to St John’s Methodist Church’s 120+ project. Mysterious walks: Find out more about the mysterious events in Settle on a guided walk visiting hidden locations linked with strange happenings and unusual occurrences and telling tales of the unexplained. Author Nigel Mortimer will be operating guided walks every second and fourth Saturday at 1.30pm and 3.30pm and on Tuesdays at 5pm. The walks last approximately 90 minutes and depart from Whitefriars car park. The cost is £5 per person.

Langcliffe Singers: Local choral group Langcliffe Singers will present a concert of Music for a Summer Evening next Saturday, July 11, at St James Church at Clapham. Photographic Group: Settle Photographic Group will once again be organising a hunt around the town for framed photographs in local shop windows from August 14 to 26. This year Find The Photos has around 90 pictures to find and look at. They are all centred around the middle of Settle and provide some interesting entertainment for both visitors and residents. Maps can be obtained free of charge from the Tourist Information Centre and some local shops, or downloaded from settlephotos.org. Following Find the Photos, there will be the annual Settle Photographic Group Exhibition over the August Bank Holiday weekend, from Saturday to Monday. It will be held in Clapham Village Hall in Clapham from 11am to 5pm and entry is free. Refreshments will be available.

There will also be indoor games and the big screen will show footage of the Grand Depart from Holland. People have been busy decorating tulips, so why not call in and admire the creativity of Silsdeners.

Silsden stroll: Meet on Wednesday at 6.30pm in Wesley Place to join in a Silsden stroll (sorry no dogs). It is a 3.4-mile walk, for which you should allow two hours.

Grand DeParty: The first event of the Grand DeParty takes place on Saturday and is a Grand Day out in Silsden Park. Various events will take place at different times throughout the day. If you wear flat-soled shoes, you can try out your bowling skills with Silsden Bowling Club or improve your cycling skills on a fun course with Becycling. Silsden Band will play at 12.30pm followed by relay races from 2.30pm for which you should turn up in good time to enter. Bring your own baton and there is a prize for the best decorated baton. Fancy dress is optional for the runners. There is also something for dog lovers, a bicycle maintenance workshop with Halfords, children’s tennis, penalty shoot-out competition and scavenger hunts for younger children. Why not bring a picnic and make a day of it? Later on, St James Church will host a Dutch evening for which admission is £5 for adults and £2.50 for children.

Rugby training: Silsden ARLFC has entered a team in the winter-based Pennine League so if you are interested in playing good quality rugby league. why not join the first training session in the park next Thursday, July 9, at 6.30pm. Farm Proms: Proms on the Farm will be held at Sycamore Farm, Silsden. on Saturday, July 18. The field will be open for picnickers and those keen to establish their places at 2pm. Free car parking is on site and there will be the usual bumper raffle plus music from the Sultans of Swing and the Big Band followed by Skelmanthorpe Brass Band with soloist Sarah Halstead and all the traditional music from The Last Night of the Proms. Proceeds will be split between Manorlands Hospice and Silsden Methodist Church. Tickets are £10 from Twiggs newsagents or you can pay on the door. Prizes will be given for the best decorated gazebo or awning space, which can be pre-booked on 01535 654509.

Skipton: Holy Trinity: There will be a wedding in Holy Trinity Church tomorrow at 11am, so the church will be closed for visitors until after noon. Friday prayers will be said at 1pm this week. It is the Holy Trinity Summer Fete on Saturday from 10am to 4pm. It will include stalls including cakes, plants, handicrafts and games and tasty refreshments will be available throughout the day. Don’t forget, this is the last week of an interesting exhibition of photographs on display at the back of the church. Every Picture tells a Story features images from the historic environment record of the national park and shows a variety of historic buildings which give the Dales and national park their distinctive qualities. Despite Sheep Day in town on Sunday, worship will be as usual, with Holy Communion at 8am, family communion at 9.45am and an evening service at 6pm. Morning Prayer is at 9am during the week, with any daily changes given on the church gate noticeboards. Toddle into Church for pre-school children and their parents or carers is at 2pm on Tuesday, Holy Communion is at 10.45am on Wednesday and members of the Women’s Fellowship will meet in the Vestry Rooms, behind the church, at 7.30pm on Wednesday evening.

Steeton: Methodist Church: Steeton Methodist Church had a wonderful weekend of celebration to mark 25 years in the present building. More than 80 people enjoyed a pie and peas supper on Saturday evening, which was followed by an interesting and very humorous talk from Ian Dewhirst, the well-known Keighley historian who spoke about chapel life in Victorian and Edwardian times. On Sunday morning, the church was packed for the anniversary service which was taken by the Rev Alan Raine, who was the minister at Steeton 25 years ago. The eldest member of the Junior Church, Sarah Burrows, sang a solo – You Raise Me Up. After the service the congregation enjoyed cakes, tea and coffee followed by the cutting of a beautiful anniversary cake.

Car boot sale: Car boot sales are up and running, with the Friends of Airedale holding theirs in the west car park on the first Sunday of the month, from April through to September. The next date is Sunday. There will be free parking for buyers and all proceeds will go to the charity.

Sutton-in-Craven: Tea dances: Tea dances are held in Sutton Village Hall every Thursday at 1.45pm. Admission is £2, which includes refreshments. If you enjoy dancing, go along and you will be very welcome.

Upper Wharfedale: Sheila Denby, 01756 752605: Archaeology festival: Upper Wharfedale Heritage Group will hold an archaeology exhibition at Long Ashes, Threshfield, from Saturday to Sunday, July 26. There will be a display of some rich and diverse archaeology from within two miles of Long Ashes. The exhibition will be open from 9am to 7pm and admission is free.

Book Club: Rylstone Book Club will discuss The Miniaturist by Jesse Burton at its meeting on Tuesday. With the exception of August, the club meets on the first Tuesday of the month and anyone who enjoys a lively discussion about books is welcome to go along. Strawberry teas: Afternoon strawberry teas will be served at Hetton Methodist Chapel next Saturday, July 11. There will be entertainment from a ukulele band.

Flower walk: There will be a three-hour flower walk in Upper Wharfedale, starting at Yockenthwaite Bridge at 11am today. Participants will be able to experience the colours and scents of the meadows and limestone pavement. The cost is £5 and to book call 01729 830416.

Village fete: Littondale Fete will be held on the village green in Arncliffe on Saturday, August 8. The committee is calling for help – both beforehand and with assistance on the day. Wigglesworth: Community Centre: June’s 100 club winner was J Middleton. The dominoes winners last Wednesday were P Lowe, A Sutcliffe, K Knowle, D Lowe, D Knight and R Knight and the whist winners were D Hogg, S Hogg, M Wellock, H Packard, V Jones and G Parker. The next meet will be Wednesday, July 29. Astrid has started her yoga classes again on Tuesday evenings and if you are interested please get in touch 07867 978246. The Saturday bacon butty mornings are as popular as ever. They run from 11am to 1pm and will continue until mid-September. Geraldine’s Zumba class welcomed a few newcomers last week. If you would like to try it, do come along as it is a fun way to get fit and costs just £3. The craft group meets next on Monday, July 13, at 7.30pm when members will be shown felt-making. Janice from Serendipity asks participants to come with a spirit of experimentation, an old hand towel, a sheet of bubble wrap the same size as the towel and items to embed in your felt, such as feathers, yarn, silks and beads.
