Bowling Club: On Saturday, club members competed for the Sanderson Doubles Trophy. This was won by Brian Heath and Ken Clee and runners up were Anne Smale and Jim Simpson. This Saturday, Austwick will host Ingleton at 1.30pm and next Thursday, July 16, the team is at home to Slaidburn.

Barnoldswick: Rotary Club: There was a big search for answers when Barnoldswick and Earby Rotary Club organised a quiz night at St Joseph’s Parish Hall. Some 120 people faced the questions from quizmaster John Dodd and the aim of the enjoyable, if brain-teasing, evening was to raise funds for Barnoldswick and Earby Bosom Friends’ Bereavement Project Group. There was a break for a pie and peas supper and a money-raising raffle, with the final outcome totalling more than £935. On behalf of Bosom Friends, Catherine Oldfield told the audience about the work of the Friends and the bereavement group project.

Bolton Abbey: Priory Church: The services this Sunday are 8am Communion (said), 10.30am Sung Eucharist and 6.30pm Evening Prayer. At 3.30pm we will have the third in our series of Sunday Afternoon Celebrity Organ Recitals. This will be given by Jason Loẅe, director of music from Giggleswick School. On Wednesday there is a said communion service at 10am. All services are the Book of Common Prayer.

Bradley: Liz Zieboll, 01535 636369: Family Day: There will be a meeting of the Family Show Day committee at 7pm this evening in the village hall meeting room. The committee is looking for a show King/Queen and two princes/princesses. Children who either live in Bradley or attend Bradley School, Bradley Brownies or Bradley Rainbows are eligible to enter. Entry forms are available at the village shop and completed entries should be returned to the shop by this Sunday. There is also a competition for children to design a poster to advertise show day. Entries should be A4 size and can be handed in at school.

School news: Class four performed a violin concert to children and parents. This was the result of taking part in the Wider Opportunities Music programme, which enabled them to have violin lessons for three half terms. Year six children have been taking part in an Enterprise Project, with teams selling fruit snacks, cakes and key rings. Classes one and two enjoyed an exciting trip to Blackpool last week.

Village Hall: Bradley Village Hall can be hired for events such as discos, concerts, band practices, wedding receptions and family parties. The hall has capacity for 100 people and has a permanent stage, changing rooms and a kitchen. Burton-in-Lonsdale: Jean Thornber, 015242 63033: Parish council: Members heard that the new sports pavilion build was progressing very well, with the roof, windows and doors now in place. The project was on target to be completed by the end of July and an official opening will be in September. Most grass verges in the village are no longer cut by North Yorkshire County Council as part of cost savings. The council is considering hiring a contractor to cut the grass, the cost of which will go on the annual precept and residents’ council tax. The council would like to encourage more local involvement in the village’s upkeep - residents could help minimise costs by cutting grass verges near to where they live perhaps on a monthly basis. Coniston Cold: Young Farmers: Last Tuesday,Coniston Cold and Rathmell Young Farmers met at Wigglesworth Hall Farm at Wigglesworth for a farm walk. Edward and Angela Booth welcomed both clubs for a tour of their dairy farm including a good hike to the river to look at the wetlands to encourage more wildlife to the local area. After refreshments and a business meeting Alice Walton gave the vote of thanks.

Embsay-with-Eastby: Andrew Wilson, 01756 790197: Community Café: The Horton Community Café will be open in the village hall annexe on Tuesday from 11.30am to 1.30pm. These cafés will now take place monthly and are aimed at people feeling isolated or lonely, those over 18 wanting to meet new people and make new links in their community and those who are experiencing low-level mental health problems. They are encouraged to join in activity sessions, exercise to music, dabble in arts and crafts and to try sewing. There are also get to know you sessions, as well as practical advice. All are welcome.

Carpet bowls: To reflect the current bus timetables the carpet bowls club now meets in the village hall on Mondays and Fridays between 10.15am and 12.15pm. New members are welcome.

Embsay churches: On Sunday, the Methodist Chapel’s 10.30am service will be led by Mrs Davis while at St Mary’s Church there will be a communion service at 9.30am. On Tuesday, St Mary’s will hold a Communion service at 10.30am and will be open for tea, coffee, home baking and conversation between 2pm and 4pm. Don’t forget that on Mondays the Methodist Chapel is open for quiet reflection between 2pm and 3.30pm and that every Tuesday morning, the Methodist Church Hall offers a variety of tabletop games and fellowship. All are welcome, just bring yourself. On Fridays between 1.45pm and 3.15pm, the Smiley Faces toddler praise takes place in St Mary’s. This is for pre-school children, their parents, carers and grandparents. There are lots of toys, craft activities, a Bible story, singing, juice, tea, coffee and time for a chat.

Women’s Institute: Embsay WI will meet on Tuesday at 7.30pm in the village hall for a members’ social evening with music.

Parish forum: An open forum meeting will take place in the village hall tonight to discuss the Chatsworth Settlement Trustees’ plans to build 39 houses on Shires Lane between the cricket ground and Low Lane. The principal concerns for villagers are the inadequacies of the present sewage system, increased threat of flooding further down the village, lack of places in the primary school, roads already overloaded, inadequate public transport, fears that electricity supplies will be be overloaded and the effect on the cricket club which has been in situ for more than a century.

Parish council: The next parish council meeting will be on Tuesday in the village hall. Members of the public are invited to attend and raise matters of concern in a specific agenda item for that purpose.

Steam railway: The Embsay and Bolton Abbey Steam Railway will run the first of its summer “Fish & Chip” specials this Saturday in conjunction with Bizzie Lizzies. Advance booking is essential.

Village Pump: The Village Pump, the over 50s group, will meet in the lower hall at Farnhill Methodist Church on Wednesday from 2pm to 3.30pm.

Ballroom dance: The next ballroom dance is tomorrow from 8pm in the village hall. The entertainment will be provided by Elizabeth Harrison. Entry is £6.50, which includes supper and a mug of tea.

Coffee Morning: The pantomime section from the village hall will host a coffee morning on Saturday between 10am and noon. All are welcome.

Sequence dance: The next monthly sequence dance will be held in the village hall on Saturday from 7.30pm. Entry is £4, which includes tea and biscuits, and everyone is welcome.

Flea market: The next flea market is on Sunday between 10am and 4pm in the village hall. There will be numerous stalls displaying bric-a-brac, antiques, plants, crafts and homemade produce. Entry is 50p and refreshments will be available throughout the day.

St Andrew’s Church: On Sunday, the BCP Holy Communion at 8am will be followed at 10.45am by an open day service which will feature many different types of music-hand bells, tower bells, a small band, the magnificent organ, Stan Drew’s choir, a psalm and perhaps one or two surprise items. Everyone from the village is welcome to come and listen. Please bring something to eat at the Jacob’s Join lunch, which will take place from noon to 1.30pm, and after that you can try any of the instruments, sing with the choir, go up the bell tower to see how the bells are rung, try the hand bells or the organ or perhaps join with the band.

Bingo: There will be a card bingo evening from 7pm next Thursday, July 16, at Neville House. All are welcome to attend and proceeds will be donated towards the residents’ entertainment and trips.

Art show: This year’s art show will commence next Thursday, July 16, in the village hall and entry is free. As well as the usual paintings on show by local people, there will also be a display of work by Harry Caunce who won last year’s People’s Choice of Best in Show. The show will be open on Thursday and Friday between 11am and 7pm, Saturday between 10am and 7pm and Sunday between 11am and 5.30pm.

Open gardens: Gargrave and Bell Busk were humming with visitors and live music on Saturday. Melodies permeated gorgeous gardens, scented with roses, and were accompanied by the fresh taste of strawberries, scones and lunches. Thanks go to all those involved: the multitude of musicians, kitchen caterers, tombola team, plant people, the hundreds of visitors who flocked from near and far, and of course the gardeners who graciously shared their combined 30 gardens for the day. It was a great community day and the funds raised will be an invaluable help to St Andrew’s Church.

Giggleswick: Gill O’Donnell, 01729 825639: St Alkelda’s: The St Alkelda’s garden party will take place on Saturday at Rose Cottage on Bankwell Road. It will open at 2pm and there will be a range of stalls including plants, books and cakes. There will also be face painting and a raffle and tea and cakes will be available. Pupils from Giggleswick Primary School will entertain with country dancing. Admission is free.

Horticultural show: Schedules are now available for this year’s Giggleswick Horticultural Show. The show will take place on August 8 at Giggleswick Junior School pavilion and will open to the public at 1.30pm. Schedules can be obtained from The Tuck Shop in Giggleswick and from Speight and Watsons, Lamberts, Lay of the Land and the tourist information centre in Settle.

Friendly games can be played at most times except when matches are held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings. Coffee morning: Members of Threshfield Institute will run the coffee morning in Church House on Saturday. It will start at 9.30am and will include a raffle and side tall.

Lending library: As part of the Reverb after-school club, a lending library has been launched for young people. All books are free to take away and read. Anyone with books to donate can leave them at Church House, clearly marked Project Reverb.

Fair total: The Spring Bank fair in Church House raised £1,120 for St Michael’s, Linton. The parochial church council thanks everyone for their support.

Bridge Club: The Bridge Club continues to meet in the Congregational Church coffee lounge on Wednesdays from 7.15pm.

End of term: Grassington and District Guides, Brownies and Rainbows will hold an end-of-term bash at the Congregational Church.

Hellifield: Ken Leak, 01729 850845: Garden visit: The next event in Hellifield Area Allotments & Gardens Association calendar is a trip to Malham Tarn House for a free guided tour of the nature reserve and walled garden. This take place next Saturday, July 18, and the plan is to share transport as parking is limited. Meet at the car park behind Aherne’s at 1.15 pm, aiming to get to Malham at 2pm. Non-members are welcome. A donation will be made to the National Trust, which looks after the garden and house, so any contribution would be gratefully received. The guides will be National Trust rangers, HAAGA member Roisin and Tony, who has been at Malham for 27 years. The visit will start by using the boardwalk in the nature reserve to see the rare wild flowers growing in the fen and bog areas. Then the group will make its way to Tarn House via the bird hide overlooking the tarn. This will be followed by a tour round the walled garden, believed to be one of the highest in the country. It provided food for the various owners of Tarn House, but fell into disuse for about 90 years until restored by the Rangers and volunteers about seven years ago. The rangers will provide tea and biscuits afterwards, so would like to know the number of people attending. Gun Club @ Members of Penyghent Gun Club have had a busy calendar recently which began with a shoot at Jop Ridding Farm, Austwick, by kind invitation of Mrs McEvoy. A McLernon and R Bold were the marshals. The winner was P Fox with 21 kills, second was R Carr with 18 kills and third was R Bold with 17 kills. R Carr was the winner of the pool shoot.

The second event took place at Horton Quarry by kind invitation of Hansons. K Humphrey was the marshal. R Carr was the winner of the shoot with 26 kills, second was K.Humphrey with 25 kills and in joint third position were P Fox and S Bamber with 20 kills each. R Carr also won the pool shoot. The latest shoot was held at Cragg Hill Farm, Horton, by kind invitation of Mr and Mrs. P Sutcliffe and family. K Humphrey was the marshal and the winner of the down the line event. R Carr was second and third was P Fox. R Carr kept up a good record of wins in the pool shoot section which concluded the event. The next members shoot will be on Sunday at 1pm in Ring Pot Pasture, Horton.

Ingleton: Sue Brown, 015242 41835: Scottish dancing: The North West Craven Branch of the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society held its annual general meeting in Ingleton Community Centre. Trevor Clarke was re-elected chairman, Roger Dearden re-elected secretary and Linda Dunnett was elected treasurer after Nita Hart stepped down. The chairman and secretary spoke of a very successful year, with the branch keeping touch with the RSCDS worldwide through the internet. Classes are run in the area and four workshops have been well attended. Two teams from NW Craven are to dance at the White Rose Festival, organised by the Leeds Branch, on Saturday. Robert Rushton was thanked for running several charity dances which had raised £1,387 for charity. The evening continued with dancing to the music of Andrew Lyon. The next AGM will be held on the last Saturday of June 2016.

Kelbrook: St Mary’s: On Sunday, St Mary’s Church will hold a communion service at 11am.

Langcliffe: Helen Jarvis, 01729 825303: Sunday teas: Last week’s Sunday Teas team raised £250 for church funds. Church treasurer David Croll thanked everyone for their efforts and attendance.

This Sunday will see the first of the teas which raise funds for the Institute. They begin at 2pm and end at 4.30pm. Please feel free to bring a plate and take something delicious away.

Book launch: The launch of the village’s own recipe book on Friday was very well attended and enough copies were sold to cover the costs of having the book printed.

Whist drive: There is to be a whist drive in the institute tomorrow.

Lawkland: Young Farmers: Lawkland Young Farmers met for dairy judging at the Feizor farm of Booth family. Results were: junior boys - 1 Luke Harrison, 2 James Thornton; junior girls - 1 Georgia Thornton, 2 Molly Taylor, 3 Becks Allen; senior boys - 1 Chris Taylor; inter girls - 1 Steph Cowgill; senior girls - 1 Cathy Polkinghorne. Long Preston: Heather Thomas-Smith, 01729 840113: Annual meeting: The 2015 annual general meeting of the Playing Fields Association will take place in the village hall on Thursday, July 30, starting at 7pm.

The meeting will deal with the election/re-election of officers and trustees; the adoption of proposed new constitution; and the proposal to surrender the lease of the playing field. All Long Preston residents aged 14 or older are entitled to attend.

Lothersdale: Young Farmers: Six members formed a guard of honour at the wedding of senior member Georgina Fort. Daniel Dobson attended the Silsden and Skipton YFC show and came away with seven firsts, two seconds, seven thirds and a trophy. Last Monday, members competed for the Practical Cup and the results were: junior girl - Jessica Tidswell; junior boy - Daniel Dobson; inter girl - Megan Thomas; inter boy - Henry Bradley; senior girl - Daisy Hammond; senior boy - Chris Bell.

Settle: Gill O’Donnell, 01729 825637 Guided walks: The Friends of Settle-Carlisle line have organised a number of guided walks on Saturday. The first walk is from Kirkby Stephen to Appleby. It is a 13-mile, moderately strenuous walk departing Kirkby Stephen at 10.34am. The second walk is from Ribblehead to Ingleton. It is an eight-mile moderate walk, leaving Ribblehead at 12.02pm and scheduled to finish in Ingleton in time to catch a connecting service bus back to Settle. The third walk connects with the 9.24am train from Carlisle and is an Appleby circular via King’s Meaburn. This is a 13-mile moderately strenuous walk, leaving Appleby at 10.06. No reservation is necessary but all participants should ensure that they are appropriately clothed, carry a packed lunch where required and have suitable footwear. Victoria Hall: On Saturday, Sita Brand, director of Settle Stories, will present Memories of an Indian Childhood, where she will transport the audience to dusty, crowded and vibrant Bombay. Welcome to Sita’s world of large families, stubborn hairdos and romantic train journeys. But slowly the light-hearted stories about friendships and games give way to darker more painful memories, including her father’s gruelling exodus at the onset of World War wo and later the Indian Emergency, Next Saturday, July 18, The Paperboys take to the stage. They were formed by Mexican-born Tom Landa in the mid-90s in Vancouver and mix Folk, celtic and bluegrass music with pop and rock as well as Son Jarocho and Afro-Mexican influences. Flowerpot Festival: Following last year’s successful flowerpot festival, the event is being repeated and members of the public, organisations, groups and businesses are invited to create and display flowerpot characters to enliven the town up to September 6.

Gallery on the Green: The exhibition, Call Me, will run at the Gallery on the Green, until August 15. It looks at the nostalgic days of the phone box. Created by Ellen Bell and Jo Hamill, the installation is an elegant, yet whimsical written collage of notable literary telephone dialogues.

Langcliffe Singers: Local choral group, The Langcliffe Singers, will present a concert of Music for a Summer Evening at St James’ Church, Clapham, on Saturday. Settle Soup: Victoria Hall is the venue for the next serving of Settle Soup next Sunday, July 19, between 6.30pm and 8.30pm. The aim of the project is to help get community projects off the ground. Everyone who attends is asked to pay £4 (£2 for children and unwaged) for soup and roll and during the session four people will “pitch” an idea for a local project. The Folly: Tomorrow, at 7.30pm, there will be a talk by Dr Mike Slater on Bertram Lambert - a Settle Man’s part in the Great War. Later this summer, on August 5, The Folly will host a junior papercraft workshop with opportunities for making bowls, marbling and creating a book. Places are limited to 20 so booking is essential. Kwezana link: Pupils in Kwezana wrote recently to tell Settle pupils about how they celebrated National Youth Day on June 16. This is a national celebration with events being organised by the government and by churches. Youth day is a way of commemorating the school students in Soweto who took part in protests in 1976 when it was decided to teach elements of the curriculum in Afrikaans. An estimated 20,000 students took part in the protests. They were met with fierce police brutality and it is estimated that between 170 and 700 were killed. There is now a school named in honour of one of the students who led the protest and was killed. The shocking events were originally remembered unofficially as Soweto Day but it is now known as Youth Day to celebrate the courage of the young people who brought international attention to their needs and ensured a free education for future generations.

Holiday club: Churches Together in Settle and District will hold a free holiday club for five to 11 year olds on July 28 and 29 in St John’s Church Hall. There will be games, bible stories and craft activities as well as lunch. The club runs from 10am to 3.30pm each day and further details are available from 01729 822311.

Photographic Group: Settle Photographic Group will once again hold a hunt around the town for framed photographs in local shop windows from August 14 to 26. This year Find The Photos has about 90 pictures to find and look at. They are all centred around the middle of Settle and provide some interesting entertainment for both visitors and residents. Maps can be obtained free of charge from the Tourist Information Centre and some local shops, or downloaded from settlephotos.org. Following Find the Photos, there will be the annual Settle Photographic Group Exhibition over the August Bank Holiday weekend, from Saturday to Monday. It will be held in Clapham Village Hall in Clapham from 11am to 5pm and entry is free. Refreshments will be available.

U3A talk: Settle District U3A meets today to hear a talk on Bess of Hardwick given by John Sheard. It will place in Victoria Hall, starting with coffee at 10am and the talk at 10.30am. Visitors are welcome for an admission charge of £1.

Hog roast: President of Settle Rotary Club, Floyd Schofield, would like to thank all those who attended the club’s hog roast at Elder Barn, Eldroth. It raised more than £1,150 for Yorkshire Air Ambulance and the Clapham Cave Rescue Organisation. Not only did the guests enjoy a delicious hog roast but were also able to listen to the music of the Giggleswick and Settle Brass Band and the Black Horse Jazz Band. It was a most entertaining afternoon.

Skipton: Oddfellows: Visitors are welcome at Frank’s music quiz night, which will take place on Saturday from 8pm. And next Saturday’s music night will launch a new local group, The Lazy Boys. Renato, Barry and Alan will provide a range of music to suit all tastes from 8pm. They will be joined by other friends for a great evening. Visitors are welcome. Holy Trinity: With summer in full swing, the next week is a quiet one in the church calendar at Holy Trinity Church. However, the bells will no doubt be ringing this afternoon with the visit of a group of bell ringers to the town. Sunday services begin at 8am with Holy Communion, followed by parish communion at 9.45am and an evening service at 6pm. Toddle into Church is an informal, happy get-together, arranged for babies to five year olds and their parents, or carers, and takes place on Tuesday from 2pm to 3pm. Mid-week Holy Communion is held at 10.45am on Wednesday and, at 2pm, pupils from the Parish Church School will be joining members of the staff, parents and carers for their leavers service at which the rector, the Rev Veronica James, and the curate, the Rev Heather Houlton, will both be officiating.

Silsden: Linda Berry, 01535 654643: Car boot sale: The next Silsden car boot sale at Riverside Field will be on Sunday. The gates open at 7am and there will be toilet and catering facilities on site. Admission is £10 for cars and £15 for vans and cars with trailers. There is free entry for buyers.

Farm Proms: The 2015 Proms on the Farm will be held at Sycamore Farm next Saturday, July 18. The field will be open for picnickers and those keen to establish their places at 2pm. Free car parking is on site and there will be the usual bumper raffle plus music from the Sultans of Swing and the Big Band followed by Skelmanthorpe Brass Band with soloist Sarah Halstead. Proceeds are split between Manorlands Hospice and Silsden Methodist Church. Tickets are £10 from Twiggs newsagents or you can pay on the door. Prizes are given for the best decorated gazebo or awning space, which can be pre-booked on 01535 654509.

History walk: Meet at the bandstand for a guided history walk around Silsden, with Silsden Local History Society, on Wednesday at 7pm.

Film night: A film night will be held at Silsden Methodist Church on Thursday, July 23, from 7.45pm.

Silsden Gala: Silsden Gala will be held as usual on the final Sunday of the month which this year means Sunday, July 26. Entries are now open for all the events so visit the facebook page for information about entering your teams.

Duck do: Silsden Duck Do will take place on Gala Day when ducks will be released from Silsden pond to race from 11.30am. Ducks cost £1 from Duval & Co hairdressers or from Silsden majorettes. There are lots of prizes to be won.

Amnesty Group: Silsden Amnesty Group meets on the second Monday of every month in Silsden Methodist Church, Kirkgate at 7,30pm.. The next meeting will be on Monday when the agenda will include the planning of the annual coffee morning, to be held on September 19. New members are welcome and more information will be available at the Silsden Showcase event in St James Church on Saturday.

Steeton: Methodist Church: Steeton Methodist Church raised the magnificent sum of £2,235 last weekend as a result of their anniversary and annual gift day. Thanks go to everyone who contributed in any way. This Sunday, the 10.30am service will be taken by the Rev Christine Hawke.There is a Junior Church every week at the same time as the service. Everyone is welcome.

Sutton-in Craven: Coffee morning: Sutton-in-Craven Community Centre Committee will hold a coffee morning at the North Street centre on Saturday at 10am. Everyone is welcome to come and enjoy a friendly atmosphere and social get-together.

Tosside: Hall dance: Raffle winners at the last dance at the community hall were R Hargreaves, C Rennard, I Alderson, M Head, D Coates, J Thompson, J Shuttleworth, B Harper, J Gore, G Beresford, J G, D Dinsdale and D Wilson. The next dance with Alan will take place next Friday, July 17, at 8pm and admission is £6, which includes a plate supper.

Whist and dominoes: Whist and dominoes will be played at the community hall next Saturday, July 18, at 7.30pm. Admission is £3, which includes supper.

Table top sale: There will be a table top sale at the community hall next Sunday, July 19, from 10am to 2pm. There will be free entry for buyers and refreshments will be available. Tables are £8 each and must be pre-booked by ringing 01729 840662.

Upper Wharfedale: Sheila Denby, 01756 752605: Church responds: St Michael’s Church, Linton, has raised £516, plus gift aid, for the Anandaban Hospital for leprosy patients. The hospital, which is in Nepal, was damaged in the recent earthquake, forcing patients and staff to live outside.

Summer concerts: Buckden Singers will present their summer concerts later this month. They will perform at St Michael’s, Hubberholme, on Friday, July 17, and St Margaret’s, Threshfield, the following night. Both concerts start at 7.30pm and tickets cost £7 for adults and free for children. It will be at Buckden car park from 10.30am to 12.30pm and Kettlewell from 2pm to 4pm.

Heritage trail: There is another opportunity to follow the Linton Heritage Trail with the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority. It has organised a four-and-a-half mile walk called A Bridge Too Far, which will take place on Tuesday. It will leave the Grassington National Park Centre at 2pm. Duck race: The next event in support of St Oswald’s Church, Arncliffe, will be the duck race next Saturday, July 18. Teas will be served in the churchyard from 2pm, with “quack off” at 3pm.

Coffee thanks: A big thank you is extended to everyone who made the Halton Gill Reading Room coffee morning such a success. It raised £646 for the Nepal earthquake relief.

Made in the Dale: The recent Made in the Dale event held in Buckden Schoolroom raised more than £300 for St Michael and All Angels’ Church, Hubberholme, and £200 for other charities.

Wigglesworth: Astrid’s yoga classes are on Tuesday evenings and if you are interested please get in touch with her on 07867 978246. The Saturday Bacon Butty Mornings are as popular as ever. They run from 11am to 1pm and will continue until mid September. Geraldine’s Zumba sessions are on Thursday evenings and cost £3. The craft group is open to anyone and next meets on Monday at 7.30pm when members will be shown felt-making. Janice from Serendipity asks participants to come with a spirit of experimentation, an old hand towel, a sheet of bubble wrap the same size as the towel plus anything you want to embed in your felt, such as feathers, yarn, silks and beads. There are a growing number of children in the village and the centre is looking at organising some activities for them. Anyone willing to help or youngsters with ideas should contact 01729 840794.
