They were met by James Maudsley, who described how churches were used in the late 16th and into the 17th centuries. St Peter’s, Heversham, was burnt down in July, 1601, but rebuilt by 1605. An enormous parish chest, dated 1400, was all that survived. The chapel of the Bellinghams of Levens Hall has an item from an earlier era. Following tea at Beetham garden centre, the party met at St Michael and All Angels, Beetham, which was built around 1300, but is thought to be on the site of a pre-Conquest church. In the chapel of the Middletons of Leighton Hall, is a 17th century communion table. In the period covered by Mr Maudsley he said that the communion table was aligned east west, with the end towards the congregation as it was only used three times a year; by 1700 the present position came into use. There is also a locked font cover in this church dated 1636. Mr Maudsley was thanked for a most interesting and informative afternoon.
