Women’s Institute: At the January meeting of Austwick WI, Jane Bradley gave a talk on willow and rush weaving. She brought along some samples of her work, demonstrated weaving and afterwards members made their own rush coaster. The next meeting will be a member’s night on February 11 at 7.30pm in the parish hall.

BARNOLDSWICK:
St Andrew’s: January 24 to January 30 is a national week of Christian Unity. This week also recognises the needs of people suffering from leprosy. There will be a coffee morning on Saturday from 10am to noon. The preacher for Sunday’s 10.30am service is Mrs S Godfrey. This will be followed by a frugal lunch, again to raise funds for the Leprosy Mission. The 6pm service will be led by Mr T Gildea. The weekly prayer hour, toddler group and Bible study will continue as usual.

BOLTON ABBEY:
Priory Church: The services on Sunday are 8am Communion (said), 10.30am Sung Eucharist and 4.30pm Evening Prayer. On the first Sunday of the month, there is a liquid family service at 9.15m. This is a fun service for all the family. On Wednesday, there is a said communion service at 10am.

Smiley Faces -the toddler praise at St Mary’s - will take place on Friday between 1.45pm and 3.15pm. Aimed at pre-school children and their parents, grandparents and carers there are lots of toys, craft activities, singing and a Bible story.
Over 50s: The January meeting of the Over 50s Forum will be next Thursday, January 28, when the speaker will be from the local Carers Resource.
Wriggle and Giggle Club: The pre-school’s wriggle and giggle club for babies and toddlers meet every Monday in term time between 2pm and 3pm in Embsay-with-Eastby Pre-school’s rooms in the village hall. The cost is just £1.50 per family, including refreshments.
Community library: The library is now open on Thursday and Friday afternoon as well as Saturday mornings. On Wednesdays between 2pm and 3pm, the Story and Singing sessions have resumed led by retired nursery school head Claire Toberman. Aimed at children under five, the sessions are free but all children must be accompanied by an adult.
Bag collection: The pre-school playgroup’s next collection of clothes, shoes and handbags is on Wednesday morning. Any donations can be left at the playgroup’s rooms in the village hall.

Primary school: Congratulations and thanks go to all the pupils who took part in the nativity tableaux at St Alkelda’s church on Christmas Eve. They worked hard during the rehearsals and performed well during the event. Congratulations also go to those pupils who took part in the Epiphany service. During the second half of the autumn term, 35 pupils achieved 100 per cent attendance and all pupils in years one and four were punctual throughout this period.
Theatre show: On Monday, Worklight Theatre will present Labels at the Richard Whiteley Theatre. It is an award-winning show using autobiographical stories of mixed heritage and racism to examine the use of words and personal prejudices.

GRASSINGTON:
Coffee morning: A coffee morning will be held at Church House on Saturday from 10am for the Syrian Refugees. They still need ongoing funding and it is urgent now that winter is here.

Flower Club: At the first meeting of 2016, North Craven Flower Club welcomed Ann Morgan from Morecambe with her display, Bring Me Sunshine. St Oswald’s: Education Sunday, Homeless Sunday and the third Sunday of Epiphany will be celebrated with a service of Holy Communion at St Oswald’s Church this weekend – January 24. It will start at 10.30am, with the church bells being rung from 10am. Everyone is welcome to come along to join the campanologists.
Parish council: Horton-in-Ribblesdale Parish Councillors were delighted to welcome two new members who have been co-opted. Meetings are held on the second Monday of the month at the village hall and new members are most welcome as it means more views can be shared on issues which can shape the future of the parish. PC Ridler gave a brief resume on crime in the area, with major concern shown over the increase in diesel theft. Anything suspicious can be reported by dialling 101. The chairman, Councillor Hanson, who is also the parish council representative on the Dole Charities, reported that 28 Christmas food parcels had been delivered to the elderly in the village and they had been gratefully received. Councillors were concerned over the withdrawal of funding to Settle Swimming Pool by Craven District Council. They felt that this facility is a vital resource to the local community and they intend to write to MP Julian Smith and various other authorities voicing their concerns. There will be an open public meeting on February 22 in the village hall when the increase of charity walks around the parish will be discussed with emphasis on proposed walks which take place through the night. If you have an opinion on the issue please come along. Refreshments will be provided. The next monthly parish council meeting will take place in the village hall on Monday, February 8, at 7.30pm.

Flood relief: An event in aid of the Cumbria Flood Relief is being held at Ingleborough Community Centre tomorrow from 11am to 4pm. Soup and sandwiches will be served along with pies and cakes. There will also be a good as new stall.
Women’s Institute: President Sue Brown welcomed members and several new members to the January meeting of Ingleborough WI. She introduced the speaker Jane Chilton who spoke about her visit to Nepal when the earthquake devastated part of the country on April 25, 2015. She was lucky to be alive having climbed the previous day where moving glaciers killed climbers and guides. She showed slides of her climb and of the guide who has accompanied her many times. Jane now uses this talk to raise money for food for the village people and to replace crops destroyed and to rebuild houses. Carol Mann gave the vote of thanks and the competition for a scarf was won by Christine Matthews. Names were taken for the Presentation Lunch to be held at Bentham Golf Club next Thursday, January 28. A jumble sale will be held next Saturday, January 30, to raise money to be divided between the the northern flood victims and refugees. In February Tanya St Pierre will speak on the hay meadows of Yorkshire.

Women’s institute: President Janette Pate welcomed old and new members to what would hopefully be another full and interesting new year for Salterforth WI. Members debated the resolution for this year’s NFWI campaign and voted for “Appropriate care in hospitals for people with dementia”. Mrs Pate introduced Gordon and Ann Sharp, with their excellent Spellbound film shows. This year members were treated to an African safari, a trip through the North Yorkshire Dales and a kite flying festival in St Annes. Sue Hornsby gave the vote of thanks and Mary Mitchell won the competition for a holiday photo. Joyce Wilson was second. The next meeting will be held on February 11 at 7.30pm in Salterforth Village Hall when members have been asked to bring and show any crafts they have learnt or to talk about anything in which they have been involved in 2015.

Victoria Hall: The Tuesday indoor market will reopen on February 2. The box office, however, is open as normal and tickets are available for the numerous events planned for early 2016. On Saturday, Bill Adair returns to compère A Celebration of Burns. Following the success of last year’s memorable evening, there will be a piper, songs, poetry, and a supper of haggis, neeps and tatties. The Swing Commanders return on Sunday with their mix of 1940s classics, boogie-woogie, western swing, 50s jump jazz and more! On Wednesday, there’s definitely a touch of the unusual and exotic in town when nine-piece band Anda Union from Inner Mongol visit Settle. The band members all grew up in families ‘with the music’, several of whom still live in the traditional Mongolian way. They came together at music college in Hohhot, their capital city, and were able to integrate traditional forms - like the now-famous throat singing - into creating a sound uniquely and mysteriously Mongolian. Christian Unity: To mark the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, a number of services have been arranged by Settle Churches Together. Today, there will be a songs of praise session at Limestone View at 6.30pm and on Sunday there will be a unity service at St John’s Methodist Church at 3pm.
Band concert: A concert by Giggleswick and Settle Brass Band will be held at Settle Parish Church on Sunday, the eve of Burns Night. This will commence at 7pm and there will be a raffle and refreshments available.
Folk Club: The Three Peaks Folk Club will meet on Sunday evening, not the usual Saturday. It will meet at Settle Social Club and will feature duo, Morfran Heights. The concert starts at 9pm and guest floor singers are welcome. Admission is £5.
Gardening Club: Settle and District Gardening Club will hold its first meeting of the year at Townhead Court on Wednesday at 2pm. This meeting is open to visitors at an admission charge of £3. It will include a talk by Les Chandler on the theme of Wildlife in the Garden.
Swimming sessions: Settle Swimming Club offers children’s swimming tuition on Monday and Thursday evenings between 6.30pm and 7.30pm. Sessions are led by a fully qualified ASA instructor. There is an extended session from 6.30pm to 8pm on Thursday evenings. Poetry launch: Local poet Jean Stevens will launch her new collection of poems, Beyond Satnav, at Friends Meeting House next Friday, January 29, at 7.30pm. This will be an hour of anecdotes, reflections and poetry followed by tea and biscuits.

Merry-go-Round: The 2016 Rotary Merry-go-Round dinner will be held on Friday, February 19. The format is a three course meal, with each course served at a different hostelry/restaurant in the Settle area and with all parties meeting at the dining hall at Giggleswick School at 7pm to start the evening. Age UK: There are currently vacancies for the Monday Club, a lunch group for older people. This meets in the coffee lounge at St John’s Church every week between noon and 2pm. Parish Church: The church would like to thank everyone for their kind donations which have enabled it to send £500 to the Cumbria floods appeal. Much of this money was given through a collection at its service of nine lessons and carols.

Sports Club: Following the two recent break-ins at The Silsden Sports Club, the club has launched a Just Giving page to raise funds for the repairs and improvements to the security of the clubhouse. Retired Men’s Forum: Members were enthralled by John Whitaker’s account of how the family business had changed from a high quality bakers in Cross Hills at the turn of the last century to the world-renowned Skipton chocolate makers of today, exporting to more than 20 countries. His philosophy was to produce a quality product at an acceptable price and you will succeed. Next week, Alan Hall will discuss Some Aspects of Bradford and its History.
Holy Trinity: On Sunday, there will be Holy Communion at 8am followed by Parish Communion at 9.45am. At 2.30pm, there is a party for those who have been baptised at Holy Trinity over the past 12 months. Evening Service will take place at Trinity Methodist Church at 4pm. On Tuesday, there is the weekly Toddle into Church group for pre-school children and their parents or carers and, on Wednesday, Holy Communion will be celebrated at 10.45am.
