BARNOLDSWICK
History Society: Barnoldswick History Society welcomed Keith Shelton who gave an illustrated talk on Trade Tokens during the 17th, 18th & 19th centuries. During the Civil War, the idea of trade tokens was evolved by local merchants and traders. By 1670, about 20,000 were issued across the country. It wasn’t until around 1672 when the Crown minted copper halfpennies and farthings that this first period of tokens came to an end. In the early decades of the 18th century, the Crown minting of copper coins became very erratic. This led to some large firms producing better quality tokens for smaller businesses, employers, towns and cities, which led, in 1797, to Parliament issuing the large “Cartwheel” copper penny and twopenny coins. However, the early years of the 19th century brought more problems and the fluctuating price of metals led to a demand by the population for more coins. This resulted in more copper tokens of smaller value and also a lesser number of gold and silver tokens. By 1817, the Royal Mint was capable of full-scale production of official coinage and on January 1, 1818 an Act of Parliament declared tokens illegal.
